The Kenko one is phenomenal on my SAL70400 on my a77. W/ the cropped sensor this gives me ridiculous reach. Obviously at the extreme extended it there is some IQ degradation, but nothing major to be completely honest.

Is it, let's say, useable wide-open at 400 x1.4?
Is the AF automatically disabled (as with the Sony version), or does it still AF?

My experience with 2x teleconverters is that they'll try to focus up to F8...so I would be inclined to say yes

Thanks for the info!

Will this TC work on an A700 or A550 fitted with a Minolta 100-300 APO D lens? Better yet, is there a list of the Minolta lenses that the Kenko TC will or won't work on. The difference in speed with a TC is of no importance to me as I am usually on a tripod. Also, AF is nice to have, but not necessary. In many situations I use MF.

Thanks all.

The Kenko 1.4x DGX is very usable WO with either the Sony 70-400 G (effectively f/8) or the Minolta AF 400 G (effectively f/6.3), if the lenses are sharp samples at the long end. AF is always engaged and EXIF data is transmitted correctly. A good Minolta APO TC 1.4x (II or D) delivers a bit better center sharpness, which is also quite improved in the corner, but does not AF with lenses such as the Sony 70-400. The Kenko DGX, however, is really good and supports much more lenses!

I have not tested the DGX with a 100-300 or 100-400 APO, which I do not own, but it should work fine and support AF since their mount recession is standard. But in dim light with such high f-stops the AF might launch the hunting season. My lenses that work with the Kenko DGX include(d):
- M AF 28-135
- M AF 50/100/200 Macro
- All M AF G tele's
- M AF 70-200 (D) G
- M AF 80-200 APO G
- Sony 70-300/400 G

brandair is correct. You can definitely keep the AF but wide open means f/8. Not bad in a bright sunny day. If it is over cast, be prepared to bump up the ISO. In that case I usually take off the TC and deal with having to zoom in a bit closer with my feet. This sometimes causes a missed shot. You give and take I suppose.

Just checked on prices for the TC 1.4 DGX for Sony. Ebay has them (shipped from Canada) for $145 plus $22 for shipping, no returns accepted. B&H has them in stock for $149 with free shipping and 30 day returns. Adorama has the same price and return policy as B%H and expects them in the warehouse within a matter of days. Doesn't take rocket science to figure this one out. Order on line after 5:45 pm Sat. 12/8. Good news.

I bought mine used from Miguel (a fellow Dyxumer) and he bought it off Adorama for $150 shipped.

New to Telconverters and after reading all this and looking at some sites, I am a little confused.
What is the difference between the PRO 300 AF DGX 1.4X and the MC4 AF 1.4 DGX offering from Kenko
Is it that the DXG is for prime lens and MC4 for zoom lens?
I will be visiting a game reserve with the SAL75300 and & wonder
1. Should I consider a TC at all ?
2. If so, which one - DGX or MC4 ?
3. If so, go for the 1.4 or the 2.0 ?

It does seem the PRO 300 AF DGX 1.4X is just not readily available.

Thanks

My Kenko 1,4X Teleplus MC4 DGX TC works excellently with my Tamron 70-200 f/2,8 at full zoom and with my Sony 70-300G at full zoom. Naturally, the Sony 300G requires good light. My A700 and A900 can be employed. And full camera services are provided to the two lenses.

Maxxum 450si, Sony A300, A700, A900 and a cubic meter of Alpha lenses

I read somewhere that the Kenko Pro 300 is no longer in production, and it certainly seems quite hard to find on the used market. The replacement, I understand, is the Kenko MC4 DGX series.

I have the 1.4x MC4 DGX and it works fine (i.e. AF and EXIF) with every lens I've tried it on so far. Image quality, to the extent that I have been able to test it, is only marginally inferior to that from my Sony 1.4x TC (which only works on 2 of my lenses). I am so impressed with it that I have the 2x version coming!

I think they only make the pro DGX versions for Canon and Nikon. I have the Sony 1.4X, the Kenko DGX MC4 1.4X (they do not make a 7 element version in 1.4), and the Kenko DGX MC7 2X. I honestly can not see any difference in them and I had the Sony 2X and ended up selling it because of that fact. I have kept the 1.4X only because the Kenko was only 4 elements but I have a hared time seeing much difference between those two as well.

Thanks chaps.
Even the 1.4x MC4 DGX is now hard to find.
Do see them on B&H & Adorama but freight is about $40 & $60 respectively - madness.
Think I will look when I stop over in Asia.

A question though - is the use of this adapter recommended or should I just be happy with the basic SAL75300?

Thx
John

The 1.4x MC4 DGX is readily available on epray, John, most with free shipping (its where I got mine from). I'm not sure that the SAL75300/MC4 marriage will be a very happy one. I was never impressed with the image quality from my SAL75300, although yours may be a better example, and it would only get worse with a teleconverter attached.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply Dave
Sorry - there was a typo from me.
I will be using the SAL-70300G (agreed the 75300 is not great)
Hope that may be compatible and make a difference.

I cannot find any new 1.4x MC4 DGX on epay. Being looking for some days now so must be searching incorrectly. If not too much hassle, wonder if you could send me a PM with a link or two.

Many thanks
John
