Even if you are by nature a solitary photographer, you are likely to get a real buzz out of meeting up with other Dyxum members to take photographs. It is fascinating to see how others tackle photographic subjects and great to actually meet the people you have been conversing with on-line.

This topic is for discussion of possible meetings anywhere in Australia. Dyxum members are invited to suggest meetings and make preliminary plans in this thread. Once you have settled on a venue and date/dates, PM me or any other admin/moderator about having a specific planned event thread set up (this makes your event more visible to other members!).

Keep an eye on regions that are near where you live and, if you are visiting somewhere that has a group, why not drop them a line in their regional thread?

An index of all the regional threads, planned meetings and resulting photographs can be found http://www.dyxum.com/dforum/forum_posts.asp?TID=13590 - here

Another Melburnian here.

I spotted a 7D user out taking some photographs of the Hurstbridge Wattle Festival steam train shuttles near Wattle Glen last weekend. I wonder if he's a member here?

Rosie, dont care what I photo as long it doesnt move much (or at all) its in good lighting, it strikes a pose and tells me the distance from my camera to itself so I can focus :D (Ive been stocking up m42 lenses!)

Talking about noticing sony/minoltians, we should get some stickers/business cards to go with the forum, like the web car clubs have. Then sneak up and stick it on their back! Or you could introduce yourself... do a bit of promotion... etc. I know what Id do :D

Ok I got up too early... too many crazy ideas.

Hi all I finally found this thread took me ages to locate it.
I will tag along to pretty much anywhere it would be great to meet up with some fellows like minded people.
I will pretty much photograph anything I have a thing for old building and lanscapes.

Love to Frank, how does next Saturday sound ;-). Did Melb - Nullabor - Esperance - Albany - Busselton - Perth - Pinnacles and home via Kal 18 months ago, desperate to do the trip again. Awesome part of the world, ~2400 photos didn't do it justice! (about 1/2 were macro wildflowers). 13,000kms in 4 weeks. Where are you exactly? We stayed out north somewhere near Wanneroo (can't remember the suburb name) but also visited people in the hills and went across to Rottnest. One of my favorite all time photos was taken in Perth from the Barracks Pier at sunset looking across the river:

http://millerz.ionix.net.au/photos/dyxum/swanriver.jpg - here

Rosie I'm another in Melb and my father & daughter (not Dyxum members but 7D/5D respectively owners) make 3 in our family.

Happy to take the 5D for a trundle but gee I miss the 7D. It's only been 5 days since it got pinched and I often went much longer than that without using it, but somehow knowing I can't just grab it when I want to makes it all the harder.

My daughter is doing Year 12 art with photography as her "major piece" so depending on when / what we photograph she is highly likely to tag along. Dad too I suspect, always glad of an excuse to take a photo, but depends on his work.

Welcome Alpha.

Time we stopped talking about it and made a date :-). I just can't decide where to go, here's my suggestions:
* Queenscliff
* Williamstown (less old stuff)
* Sovereign Hill (love it there, you get some great people & low light shots)
* Dandenong Ranges somewhere (eg tulip festival, Silvan dam)
* Puffing Billy at Belgrave / Selby Bridge / Emerald Lake
* CBD but a bit hard to stay together as a group
* Somewhere along the Yarra (but apart from Southbank area it's not too photogenic generally, I've tried lots of times!!)
* City from down under the Bolte (but a bit limited for variety)

Sat arvo & sun arvo suit me best, but can do all day Sat at a pinch.

Rosie, since the thread was your idea ;-), got any location suggestions?

Sunday's are best for me and natamambo, if your daughter could come too that would be great or I will be outnumbered something chronic!!!!

The Yarra around Studley Park is very beautiful and haven't been there for say 15 years, Puffing Billy would be a blast as it is even longer since I have been there!!! Soverieign Hill is 2 hours from here (I have 2 kids at Uni up there) but I am happy to wonder the city too - I'm not being very helpful here am I?

My camera club is going to the Tulip Festival on Sunday 23rd Sept - that is always a good day - no Minolta/Sony there though!! We are scheduled to go to the Maldon area on 30th Sept - a long day but fun never the less!!

Ok, some ideas there... lets narrow it down!

Sundays are good for me also.Rosie i am also planning on going to the Tulip festival on that day so keep an eye out for a Sony A100 you never it might be me.

A couple more suggestions
Botanic gardens are central.
St Kilda/Port Melbourne Foreshore
Emerald lake is another good location as you get puffing billy as well.
sorry just more ideas probably dosnt help much.

Rosie 23rd sounds good. Gotta get to Church first, so wouldn't be up in the hills until about 1:00pm but if the weather's good that should give us about 4 hours, which is plenty long enough for a first time I suspect.

Maybe we settle on either the tulip farm or Emerald Lake. EL shuts at 4:30pm, though at the moment and the best light is still yet to happen. Tesselars shuts at 5:00pm.

23rd will be very busy at Tesselars as that's the Dutch festival weekend, could make good photos hard to find among all the tourists.

Since we already have 2 in the hills on the 23rd and I'm just down the road it seems the hills could be the goer, all we need now is consensus on which part of the hills we go to. I vote for a 1:00pm start.

Graham, I wouldn't worry too much about the tourists. I was there 2 years ago on the same weekend and the extras there are just too good a photographic opportunity to pass up on - costumes galore and entertainment to boot!

True, there are prople EVERYWHERE but I have some great shots of the folk dancing and the cheese races.

There are 1000's of tulips and there is the chance tostay later and catch the opera, not too sure about the sunset though but from right down the other end of the farm looking back up the hill, it could be quite nice.

There is a discount for 10 or more and the chance to have another plate of poffertjes makes it an outing I am looking forward to ;P

1.00pm start I am sure would be fine for everyone - so who's interested???

Well I had a ball, ages since I had a day out with the camera for the sake of it, and it was so great to go to a "camera club" where the Nicanon people didn't look down their nose at my gear. I reckon we Melbourne Dyxumites need to do that again before Christmas.

My suggestion is to be at the Shrine on the 11/11 - it's a Sunday and there'll be plenty see I reckon. Main ceremony kicks off at 10:30am, once that's over at about 12:00pm we could wander over to the Botanical Gardens or else down towards the river / city somewhere.

By mid-late Oct I'll be desperate to get out and try the A700 and 70-210SSM but I have exams in the last week of oct and couldn't commit a whole day.

Sun 21st Oct 1:00pm outside the StaMford or the StaMford then ?

Anyone up for the 11th Nov as well? Lots of pomp & ceremony at the Shrine that day.

Just thought I'd mention the magnitude of this next Ozzie Dyxum gathering for you OS folks. Brisbane (where Keith is) is the third large city in distance from Melbourne (where those who met last week are), it is about 1,800kms (1,100 miles) away!

The Stamford near Collins St is the usual place. Once the travel is confirmed I'll let you know. You can show me the sights of Melbourne I've been missing. Another thing, I'll be fling out on the weekends if I can so I probably won't be a starter then. But I'll get back when I know for sure.

Might I suggest a night shoot for Wednesday 17th in town? Expressions of interest and ideas for locations welcomed.

This is the sum total of my Melbourne night shots so I reckon some expert guidance might help heaps.

Looks pretty good to me - apart from the river, which is dwarfed by the Brissy R and the Storey Bridge in terms of photo ops, it's pretty hard to get good shots in town.

Technically you need a permit to use a tripod in the CBD and the parking inspectors have been issuing on the spot fines again recently. Need to pick a spot where you & tripod are unobtrusive and there is no risk of people tripping on the tripod. A crowd of us will draw attention so those going will need to be careful.....

Are you allowed to post 7i images here ?

Tell me you are joking about the tripod thing? If not, where can I get a permit. Sigh.

Ok, just spoke to a lady named Amanda from the Melbourne City Council and she said as long as we are not making padestrians walk out on to the road to go around us, and not photographing privately owned building for commercial purposes then it's ok to have tripods, even in a group of 6 or 7. She did tell me however that a group that size might peak the interest of the security staff at Crown as even the waterfront there is privately managed, so we can either a) risk it, b) take photos from the other side of the river there or c) contact their security and ask permission.

Being as I am famous for coming to grief with the authorities, I rang them as well and found this on the website: https://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/info.cfm?top=289&pa=2710&pg=2719

Note that still photography and "filming" are considered the same thing regarding the regulations.

Thought this was interesting:

Which CBD locations are not controlled by the City of Melbourne?

The City of Melbourne does not issue permits for the areas outlined below. Direct contact with the approval authority will be required to gain permission to film in:

Federation Square - http://www.federationsquare.com.au/Opens in a new window

Docklands (including some streets and bridges) - http://www.docklands.com/docklands/Opens in a new window

Melbourne Museum - http://melbourne.museum.vic.gov.au/Opens in a new window

State Library - http://www.slv.vic.gov.au/ Opens in a new window

The Botanic Gardens - http://www.rbg.vic.gov.au/homeOpens in a new window

Campbell Arcade, Block Arcade, and Royal Arcade - the City of Melbourne can contact these bodies on your behalf.

CityLink (including the Bolte Bridge) - http://www.citylink.com.au/Opens in a new window; VicRoads - http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au Opens in a new window

Major city train stations including Flinders Street, Flagstaff, Melbourne Central and Parliament Stations - http://www.connexmelbourne.com.au/Opens in a new window

Southern Cross Station - Southern Cross Station Authority. Telephone: (03) 9619 1600.

So potentially, there may be the equivalent of local laws covering the insides or premises of these places. shots from the street should be OK.

As for bombers pinging folks with a tripod, I have the Events group calling later today about that. I want anything stated in writing.

In the last 6 months I've used tripods in Fed Square, the Botanic Gardens (3-4 times) Melbourne Museum surrounds, and Docklands.... never has so much as a glance from security etc.

You can be unlucky, I guess, but in my experience it's not the hypervigilant big brother crackdown that the website covers them for.

Southbank (casino precinct) on the other hand, is a little notorious for security not being camera friendly

I can't make it into the CBD for you visit Keith, but my suggestion would be, rather than getting too stressed about permits and written permissions, just avoid southbank and the train stations.

Instead, stick to, say Fed Square (very interesting modern architecture, lots of street photog opportunities), Bot Gdns (before sundown - they then close the gates... and the fence is a pain with a camera bag, I can assure you)

Block arcade et al are great narrow little laneways, and good sources of street-life, graffiti, and so on, but are not smart spaces for tripods - I've spent lots of time in them with the camera, but go handheld for that part

PS I think a key phrase on that page you cited was "a photo shoot for a commercial purpose"... which is on a grander scale than anything you'll be doing. Being 'for commercial purposes' is what brings in the public liability requirements mentioned, and a lot of the other red tape. To me, most of that us just not applicable.

Posted By: keith_h
Date Posted: 05 October 2007 at 08:03
I agree but they person I spoke with didn't differentiate between commercial photography and everyone else. Hence I'll get it in writing. Not stressing, been there done that last year which seems kind of amusing now even if it wasn't then. Just making sure I cover my bases.

I'll be down again so maybe we can catch up another time. And I'll be back at the beach with the camera Saturday as well. Git that covered now as well.

Nup, not joking Keith, unfortunately. As to Crown, tripod or not the guards there have been known to stand there while you delete your photos! Southbank itself you can use your camera only from the promenade to take photos of the river, statues etc but not the buildings.

Having said that, we've gotten away with it at times and just escorted off the premises (Southbank) at others. Haven't been pinged for a tripod myself but folks from my local camera club have been according to people in my Church camera club who are in the other one as well.

Having said all that my Club is doing Southbank / Bolte Bridge area tomorrow afternoon, so that will be a "real life test" .

17th is fine at the minute. I might be needed for a meeting about 2100 so it probably won't be a late night.

edit: probably looking to wrap up by 2100. Start time can be from say 1700 or whatever time makes sense. That makes for a short evening particularly if there are significant travel commitments. Anyway, lets discuss and see if this might work.

Keith I'll decide on the day but will try ot get there. Where will kinda depend on the weather, but forecast is for fine and 25 - in fact the best Spring day in the next week! Southbank (just don't get caught), Flinders St that general area is probably the best at night as anywhere else involves a drive or train / tram ride. I can't get there before 6:30 or perhaps even 7:00 (don't get off work before 5:30 and often later than that).

OK then from 645 pm, how about in front of the Flinders St station then? Wet is fine also as you get plenty of reflections and low cloud. I got some interesting shots of the top of the building that has the tower that changes colour (101 Collins?) but was too lazy to get out the tripod so have nothing worth showing. I'll want another crack at that. I would like to try a shot back over the city from the southern end of the Princes bridge as well.

I have walked miles around the city recently so I have some other ideas we can consider. There is a ferris wheel down by the river also but it may not be there by next Thursday.

The view above is the GPO hand held, again too lazy to break out the tripod.

Rosie I'm still hoping to make it, but things happen unxpectedly in this place on work days. I'll be driving in from Camberwell and parking somewhere in the city. Ferris wheel in Birrarungmar Park is permanent, I'll probably park somewhere near there if you wanted to change the meeting point and start off near there somewhere. Give me a call (you've got my number) if you want to discuss transport home as I'm in Rowville.

Forecast is for 27 so it should be a great evening but sunset itself will be over by 6:45pm, it will be dusk by then.

Sunsets and sunrises for that matter have been pretty ordinary this past week. The sun set yesterday at about 7-30 and was a spectacular red/pink for about 10 minutes. Of course I had no tripod with me and only had the 7i so no AS.

I'm going to recommend cafe Chintto in Fed Square for a decent meal when we are ready.

Any interest in a DM in either Brisbane or Melbourne between the middle of June and July? Looks like me and my girlfriend are going to visit her family this summer and will be spendning at least a week in Brisbane (with family) and also be gallivanting around different parts of the east coast and Melbourne. We'll definetely be going to the Gold Coast, Noosa and a high probability of a few days in Sydney. Final schedule to be determined in the next few weeks.

Would be fun to meet up with a few upside-down Dyxum:ers!

Sounds like a plan - as soon as you know your Melbourne dates let us know and we can formalise something. Only catch is that's winter, so it could be hard to find anything worth shooting.

Well, I've been to Sydney and Brisbane during the winter and there was lots to shoot! Winter in Brisbane was actually quite comparable to summer in Stockholm.

What's the weather like in winter in Melbourne?
