So would most of you agree that for now, the a9 is the closest I can get to the 1DXii performance (and by almost all reports it bests the 1DXii) in a much smaller/lighter body?
It's a moot point. I just know that the posters here are deep thinkers and composite the known facts. My a9 arrives Monday whether it supplants in performance or not it will supplant it in my kit.

The A7R2 already has an electronic shutter (silent shutter), it just cannot be used for continuous shooting. You are right that the volume of data would make a high frame rate and high resolution camera require very fast read out speeds, which may not he possible for continuous shooting. But it will have silent shutter and therefore it will have an electronic shutter.

P.s. All the rumors strongly suggest the next camera this year will be an A7ii replacement. I don't think it will use the A9 body. I don't think there will be an A9r or sometbing just yet.

MOD EDIT: changed a i typo into a u, don't think there's such a thing as a silent shitter, at least not in my experience.
