I can't believe the images I have been able to capture with my new a77, I planned on keeping my a700 as a backup or second camera for events but with the SSM kit lens and the Zeiss 85 and the SSM 70-300 I don't need anything else. The a700 will be given to my daughter and when the full frame comes out I might seriously consider getting one. My work in post processing has been cut in half, the time preparing the shot is almost immediate and I spend almost no time checking images during a shoot, heck I even turned off the auto review.

SONY has blown my mind with this product.

It seems that flash over-exposure is quite a common problem if this thread on dpreview is to be believed. Gary Friedman appears to be collating serial numbers of affected A77s.

As I do lots of macro stuff with multiple flashes I'm a bit concerned. I was nearly stupid enough to ask whether you were using TTL or ADI.
I've had good success with the F58, no idea if that has any bearing.

Chroma noise only evident at high magnifications. -Auto exposure with a diffused F42 is not good. It has a tendency to bad over exposure with subjects within about 2 metres. I had to use -1.7 ev flash compensation to get the same exposure as my A700. I was quite surprised about this as the A700 rarely let me down using pre-flash TTL.

-I'm concerned about the levels of chroma noise in the mid-tones in ISO 100-200. Well, it arrived today and managed to get 15 minutes to play with it in my lunch break and have proved that my Sigma 100-300mm F4 works OK on it. Here are a few test shots. No masterpieces I'm afraid.

Just bear in mind that the SLT way of working is a bit different and takes a little bit of time (not that much) to get the best out of the camera.

I tried out an A65 viewfinder today and think I can live with it. I managed to find a UK retailer who had an A77 body in stock and placed my order. I should receive it tomorrow.

Thanks for everyone's comments, especially those that allayed my concerns about my Sigma lenses.

Totally agree and I also love my Sony lenses, but I would like something a bit more modern than my A700, so that's why I now have to look elsewhere for OVF. Like I said, this stupid HP desktop cannot have more RAM fitted or the chip upgraded so even if the processor can cope I can't add RAM. There is not going to be any OVF from sony for both APS-C or FF bodies. All those rumours are waste of time. OVF is history for Alpha system. SLT, NEX or change system. I stick to Sony. Love Sony lenses and Dyxum.

The main thing you need for the bigger files is more RAM and a 64-bit O/S.
Your existing processor will probably cope Ok.
Other than that, you might consider a faster HDD.

Hi Steve, I am following this thread with keen interest because I am in a very similar position. Firstly let me answer your quote - my PC is also "older" and I can tell you first hand, it struggles with the 24.2mp RAW pics from my A850, and I can't upgrade either the RAM or chip So I will have to upgrade my PC very soon - more money !!

I have had the use of an A77 for only a full weekend and whilst I was fairly impressed I had serious reservation about the EVF - I just did not like it. I agree that perhaps one could get used to it but that lag annoyed me intensly. I missed several bird shots because of the lag and the whole experience just felt "artificial". I also did not like the jpeg pics I took but the RAW ones were tops (I shoot 99% in RAW so not a problem). It handled very well and I could see how all the "features" would be useful. I loved the AF and 12fps.

As someone said earlier if anyone wants to stay with A mount 7 series then there is no choice but the A77. That said I have to agree it is a very good camera and if I was set to move on from my A700 the A77 would be a good choice. You should however try it before you buy it.

I am not going to get rid of my A700 for the A77 and I am looking toward other brands becasue I just prefer the whole "traditional" feel to my cameras and I love a good OVF. I have a 2010 model sigma 50 1.4 HSM and a 2002 model 70-200 2.8 APO IF, both work perfectly with the A77. I know you asked specifically about AF into the light in another thread but I can't remember which. Anyway seeing as we touched upon it here as well....
This is directly into the sun as you can see and the 100% centre crop shows where the AF landed.
I can only tell you that AF in these conditions is not a problem for my A77 at least.

That's good to hear, Sigma did say that it was only some HSM lenses that may have issues although I note that your lens may have been one of them.
