Early last summer, I posted a link to a longer version of this video. I've re-edited the video, put a different tune to go along with the scenery. Aside from streamlining the presentation, I got the chance to relive a trip to some of the most spectatular scenery in the United States. Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks are truly amazing places on earth.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks for sharing.
Nice footage, it seems to work the best where the natural sound is present.
Itīs always hard to get a storyline in videos like that. We see a lot of nice clips, but not much of a story.
I know, itīs hard, but try - before you are shooting (meaning at home or like that)- to decide how you will make a story and a story from what kind of point of view.

Thanks for the comments. The video was meant to show what we saw, not to tell a story. I was in wonderment of everything that I saw, plus we went all over the place at a somewhat irregular schedule, so I could never really plan what to shoot - just shot what was there. And I think if I visit those places, I'll do the same thing again. The sheer joy of seeing the unexpected - that's what the parks really give me. I still ended up taking more photographs than videos though.

Here is a video that I shot that was meant to tell a story.

Hi Winston,

I'll have a look at this later tonight - need a change from the grey and wet November day that we have here and I can never see too much of those fabulous locations!

Kind regards, Neil.

Hi Neil,

Better not look at the second video then. It was a local rowing team rowing in the Anacostia River while a Northeaster was going up the Atlantic seaboard. I finally ended up making a photo book of our trip to Yellowstone and the Tetons. With winter coming, I needed a reminder of our summer escapade.

I greatly enjoyed looking at all the pictures you posted of the same venue.

You know, I had this vague idea that I wanted to do all these things while at Grand Teton and Yellowstone. And yet aside from waking up early to watch the sun light up the Teton range or watch steam rise from the pools, most of our days were kind of hodge podge. Hike Jenny Lake. Look for wildlife. Drive to the pools, etc. I think the randomness of it all, crazily enough, made the trip really interesting for me. It's like opening a present every time I opened my eyes and being totally surprised at what I received (or close enough). Places such as Yellowstone and Grand Teton National parks are really gifts of nature to us all. I can't get enough of these two places.

Hi Winston,

I still have plenty more images to work through (only up to Day 3 I think at the moment!) and a book to go with my Winter visit is definitely on the cards as well, though it might take a little time!

We had planned quite a few things but my wife having a chest infection whilst we were there put paid to a number of those (always next time...) but that didn't diminish the experience any - I think you hit the nail on the head with the comment about the randomness; it's the sort of place where you can happily wander from one place to another; take an unexpected (and unmarked) road off into the sage brush and see where it takes you (always beautiful!) or a trail off the beaten track. There will always be something to amaze, surprise or make you wonder at the beauty of it all that not having plans doesn't really matter one bit. As I said before, we must have been so close to overlapping each other that we probably have the same series of images (if not the weather!) but that is not going to stop me posting more once they are ready.

In the meantime, it's off to have a look at your video and I will repost about that once I've seen it!

Take care and best regards, Neil.

Its absolutely fine to just show what you saw during your trip.
Speaking about story, i dont mean you have to plan what you are going to shoot, but how you shoot and how to get some kind of flow into the video, not "just" a series of random clips combined to a movie that could as well have been just a number of single clips shown one after each other.
Thinking about "story" before you leave home and thinking about what you wanna have after your trip may make your movie (or photos) much more interesting both for you in the future but also for your viewers.
Before you look at this as pure criticism i have to say i have done and still do a lot like your movie...but i just know how much i miss in doing so.....but i do not always follow my own advices....and do regrets

jkp1,

I appreciate the comments - and had I better video clips, I probably could have told a better "story" - but I spent a lot of time taking pictures, and even more time panting chasing my in better shape teenage sons go all over the place. Well actually, I would take five or so minutes taking a picture of a flower, walk five meters, take another flower picture, etc. and everyone would be back from where we were supposed to go before I was even halfway there. Annoying for them (and me too). But, I think maybe I'll see if I can reorder the clips to get a more coherent flow - I had this longer version before that I posted, but it was just longer versions of the same clips, with a different soundtrack. I think this is why it takes a while before a photographer takes a while to get a good handle of video production. A slightly different mindset required in at least planning a video. It's not a collage (although I think the video I posted probably qualifies as one, roughly).

Hi Winston,

Now in the right thread and watching the right movie with the correct soundtrack it works so much better than the first one I watched.

I think the selection of music and, especially the way you've balanced the ebb and flow of the music to the subject matter in the movie worked very well for me; perhaps the only excpetion being Canyon Falls which lacked the matching punch in the music to go with the crescendo of the falls but that's a really minor comment overall. I think getting the balance of the mood in the music to the images we see before us is a fine balance and you've come very close here so it's a big from me on this one

I liked it a lot and perhaps gives me a different perspective on what I could do for another visit....

Thanks for the link and best regards, Neil.

Winston -- you are a naughty boy! Using someone else's music and then not giving a credit.

Source info requested.

I will rectify that situation on the next revision (still a work in progress). The music if from the Miyazaki film "Princess Mononoke" and the soundtrack was composed by Joe Hisaishi.   The actual track is titled "Ashitaka and San." This is a great animated film by one of the foremost animators in the planet, Hayao Miyazaki.

UPDATE: I've added the musical attribution, something I should have done when the video was first created. Thank you for the friendly reminder.
