Wasn't quite sure which bit of the forum to put this in - but here goes anyway!
Despite having only just purchased my A500 (2nd hand - good deal) I have now been offered a small contribution towards a better improved model and am thinking I would also really like one that does video too. I was pretty fixed on the A580, as was thinking it would have better ISO and image quality - but have now started reading reviews etc and it seems maybe the differences are not that big? I did like the sound of the autofocus for video, but some people seem to think it is not really worth using? I suspect that either camera would be amazing and I will enjoy whatever I choose - but not sure which way to go! Both are available for almost identical prices (L20 difference) so no biggie there. So any contributions from people? Which would you choose? |

The a580 doesn't refocus during filming so although I've used it a couple of times when my video camera was unavailable, as soon as the subject moves it's out of focus. The a55 on the other hand does autofocus during filming which sounds much more useful.

I think the differences are small (IQ, handling) but some could be important like the refocus during video.
Another big difference is size, if you have big hands the A580 might be more comfortable then the A55 and vice-versa. Also some people love the EVF while others hate it, so it's very personal. So maybe go to a shop and test both side-by-side before deciding to make sure you get what you really like best. |

I am a member of the "if its good enough don't worry" school of tech. I have the a580 and am happy with it, files allow for decent cropping of sports photos for the family. I also have a a33 which I bought used for the video and occasional still photo. The a33 allows zoom focusing in video mode. The a33 body takes only a small space in a shoulder bag with the a 580 and a couple of lenses. Even in-doors at 1600 the a33 takes decent videos for the family. I find this single body combination with three lenses (one fixed 50 1.8) more than adequate for general use including the grand kids sports; both inside and out.

well, good sir.. I'm glad to say that it is useful, even for non-videographers like me. I actually almost never use the video feature in A55 back when i still have it. But my huge huge thumb often hit the video button accidentally and so i thought "oh well... might as well try it". and the AF while recording is really that helpful in making sure that your family members' face kept out of blurs. if you are looking for an all-rounder camera, A55 is a very good camera. As other forum members has said earlier, it doesn't take much space in your bag and it's light. I miss it sometimes...

Have now started looking at the A65, as I tried the A55 out in a shop and I just cannot deal with the tiny size and weight. Can't really imagine using it with my Beercan - in fact I think even my Tamron 17-50 would feel wrong with it. Very into how my equipments feels (shame none of my choices feel as good as my old beloved A100) but need better performance than that!
Am trying to be a bit put off by the price of the A65 (and my finac eis definitely tryign to put me off) but I reckon with my works agreed contribution and flogging my A500 I should only end up approx L150 down so canm't really complain! PS - Anyone looking for a like new A500 body only? Have box and all original accessories! ;-) |
