Hi all,

Although I don't shoot one myself, I'm going to be handling a700 files this Friday, developing and printing them for sale at an event.

I know that LR support of alphas is... let's say sub-optimal and I use custom colour profiles to get decent results with other cameras. Not having any experience with an a700, I was wondering if you'd consider this neccessary, and if so if you could share your profiles with me?

Cheers!

Adam

Adam, Here's the one that I use. There are a couple of other threads here that suggest other profiles. All are to some extent dependent on the WB you use. Cheers... Brian

Great! I've never played with a700 files much before and the lighting will be quite odd on the night, so I'll be much happier using colours that someone else has faith in

I didn't find the right preset for A700 yet, although I am using LR and A700.
Usually for good lighting, LR is doing fine. For low-light situations, LR is really bad and usually I adjust manually for each picture. It is a real pain if you are back from event and you have more than 400 pictures...
I downloaded some of the presets that you can find here and there (I don't remember if I have the presets that Brian links to, but I'll check it later today), and they help. But yet, I didn't find the one global settings that at least take me to the picture I see on the camera as a starting point (I know it is just a preview, and if I like it I can always shoot JPEG. The point is that in the field I examine my pictures according to the preview and decide whether I can do something with that picture or if I need to take another one. But I do want to work on some of the pictures).

Adam,

If quality processing is an issue you might do yourself a favor and download the LR 3.0 beta to consider doing your processing in for this project (this is against Adobe's standard beta advice I am sure). Sony RAW files are now getting a much better treatment than in 2.5, especially when it comes to anything in higher ISO ranges. The color profiles that others are pointing you to will work fine in the beta too and the playing field for rendering seems to be on much closer par to the other cameras now. Sharpening and noise reduction are a world apart from 2.5.

I will caution not to try and rename folders from within the beta though as there are some bugs with that causing files to disappear from view in the program for a while.

Gary

Also, make sure if you decide to LR3b that after import check each file when editing to make sure it's using process version 2, version 1 is what is in LR2.5. If you look at the histogram while in the Develop module...if there is a warning sign over it, click it and it will switch to Process Version 2.

I haven't found a way to batch switch a bunch of images yet. That irritates me.

Yes, I'll be using LR V3 on the night, and in fact it's so good that I'm reprocessing a lot of shots with it! Even so, I still use a custom colour profile, especially when dealing with skin tones.

We've got a very complicated setup which involved exporting to network drives on 3 computers to handle processing, printing and a slideshow... As such, file importing to LR is done by a watched folder, with files being sent there already renamed from another program - therefore we have no import dialogue box to worry about. From visual inspection it looks like it's being processed with the new process version, but I'll check that again on the night!

Using the values posted Here the JPEG out of camera (on standard w/o any adjustments) look great. This is not the case w/ the RAW files though. LR (using LR3 beta know) never seems to get Sony RAW files right. I mean they look awful, with or without the above presets applied.

I've just created my own dual illuminant profile (RAW) for my A700 with x-rite color checker passport.
If anybody interested can download from HERE

Or, if you are a dropbox user try THIS link:

Thanks

Thanks Roby. I've been playing with your new profile and it is working well on some of my images. It takes out a bit of the reddish cast that Lightroom can tend to give sometimes.

@roby,

I just wanted to let you know your new 'Sony DSLR-A-700 Roby Dual' calibration profile is really pulling in some very nice results for me on the LR 4 Beta. White balance seems improved in general in LR4 and your calibration profile is icing on the cake on lots of lighting conditions.

Thanks,

Gary

Thanks Gary, I'm glad it worked fine for you.
Of course it's calibrated on my A700 sensor but I think there should be very little differences between sensors of the same model... :)
