Topic: A700 front control wheel acting odd..Posted: 02 April 2009 at 16:25 |

Recently, I have noticed that my front control wheel has been acting strange; most specifically, this morning when adjusting ISO, one right click of the front wheel took the ISO straight from 200 to 6400. I am also fairly sure that I have seen my aperture/shutter speed jump, but I know it has not been happening until recently.
May be a stupid question, but can I safely assume this will get worse? And if anyone has had this problem (That got worse), how much was it to fix? My a700 is more than a year old , and is one of the first 600 cameras made (known by serial #), so it is "old" at this point. Any advice is great.. thanks! |

Very odd.
I would, before you pack it up for repair, try a full reset to factory settings- it could be that something has got corrupted. As to repair costs, tr a PM to Dyxum member msoares. Mark is a Senior Customer Service rep. at Precision Camera and should be able to advise you. |

It really is odd, and also not constant. After the ISO jump, I had no problem fixing it with the same wheel immediately after.
I will try a reset.. maybe my camera has been around Windows too much.
So for Precision... are they really the best way to go? I swear I remember reading lots of complaints, but I may be mistaken. Sony Lardeo, while slightly slow, has treated me well, but i don't know if they will handle out of warranty. I guess I will consider all options.. |

I have the same problem with my A100 control wheel. I bought it "Like New" (it was a demo). I used the control wheel to adjust apreture and shutter speeds in the repective modes. When I bought the camera, it would jump every now and then. After about a year, it was doing it so bad, it was driving me crazy. I have the A700 now (>1 year) and no problems. I still use the 100 as a backup.

This is a well known and documented problem.
I bought my A700 the day it was released, and now after a year and a half it tends to jump all over the place. Whether it is ISO, shutter speed, F/stop, EV comp, what ever I'm adjusting, it tends to jump around. Also, when viewing photos on the card it will do the same. Recently there was a thread on dyxum about this problem and some instructions for cleaning the contact points on the wheels. I didn't try it but probably will before too long since the condition is gradually getting worse. |

I've also had this problem, and considered sending it in for repair (it sounds like in most cases Sony will repair at no cost since this is a known issue), or using the contact cleaner spray that some have reported working on dpreview threads.
Ultimately, I got frustrated with it one day and rolled the control dial very quickly and firmly in both directions. That actually seems to have fixed the problem with mine. When you roll the dial, you can feel that it will "give" just a little when you push it down. I think that, at least with mine, it was just a matter of some dirt/grime getting caught in the wheel, and my frustrated quick rolling of the wheel seems to have dislodged it. I did this about 2 months ago, and have not had any problems since. |

Well, I guess that will teach me to search better.
Of course.. more frustrating now is that it seems some backfocus has creeped back into my camera (had already sent it to Sony for repair once for this). Ah, the smell of massive simultaneous failure in the morning....*sigh* |

Both the wheels are doing it on mine, very annoyimng, but generally not too much of a problem, if anything else goes then it will end up in the shop, otherwise it may get a little clean some time. Rotating the wheels back and forth a couple of times has helped mine too but not for too long.

As an experiment, try removing the battery for a few seconds, and then put it back in. Did that help?

Yep, had the same problem on my 700 after about a year. The culprit is most likely dirty contacts on the wheel switch. I just sparingly used some electronic contact cleaner spray on the wheel and it cleared up the problem... for now. :)

Nope, in fact, it is now worse (though, not due to the battery). I went from a random change, to half of my scrolls (especially in review moved) activates and unwanted and unstoppable cruise control. This is really annoying because it is doing it when I am trying to check critical focus, and I have to go hunting back to the right photo. But that still isn't as annoying as the new AF wierdness that I am seeing (on my macro for example, it will spaz back and forth, or be jerky... but the lens itself is just fine (nice and smooth, it is the camera AF that is racking). I know the macro is not a great example, but I have never seen my camera do this before.... *sigh*.. I can't afford a repair, nor can I really afford a new camera...

Could you be more specific on how the AF is acting weirdly? I believe I am having the same problem, also more pronounced with the 100/2.8 macro lens. It has excessive trouble locking focus at anything over 1/4 magnification, and is quite jerky.
