Seems that the full product manual isn't available currently for download. I've followed the above steps and I'm getting to the section where I've downloaded it before (on another PC not availble to me right now)...but it's not there now. The only files for download are the Brochure, and Warranty Card.

Hi Christine,

I would call back, tell them you would simply like to purchase the Extended Warranty for your newly purchased A700. IMHO, get the accidental coverage, and not just the "basic" extended warranty.

The sales staff at Sony Style still needs a bit more trainig at this time... :)

This is directly from their website (SONYSTYLE):
None
2 Year Service Plan with Accidental Damage from Handling[$99.99]
3 Year Service Plan with Accidental Damage from Handling[$139.99]
4 Year Service Plan with Accidental Damage from Handling[$179.99]
2 Year Service Plan[$52.99]
3 Year Service Plan[$99.99]
4 Year Service Plan[$119.99]
Find out more about Service Plans

Good Luck!

PS. I purchased the 4 year accidental and NO I did NOT purchase the camera from Sony Style... You have 30 days to purchase the warranty from date of purchase.

I called again. This time the person took my phone # found me and gave me another # to contact. Theye were already closed (Eastern time, I am in California)... This is my 30st day. I thought I had 60 days. I have been trying for a week but didn't know it was 30 days. I hope having started is good enough and I can fix it tomorrow.

i also left e-mail to the person I had contacted with my previous camera.

Hi Christine,

I don't think this will be a problem, just tell them that you tried calling yesterday but the line was closed.

Good Luck!

You can buy the extended warranty online at sonystyle so if you hurry you'll be in the 30 day limit and you won't have to talk to someone who doesn't know what they are talking about. Just go to sonystyle and search "service contract" and it will bring up a (long) list. I bought my a700 from a 3rd party retailer and bought the contract online at sonystyle.com

Hello, great tips - thanks, l just got my a700 last week, so l have been trying to tweak the settings, well fiddling would be a better word, have we got anymore tips from the honourable member "Shaocaholica" (man thats a mouth full to pronounce) or equally wise guru's/guret's before the A900 is released and the poor novices are left behind, yes l know read the manual but it's great when someone explains things in lay terms, by the examples on PG 1.
cheers

Reading more about the service contracts at Sonystyle and it states:

What are Accidental Damage from Handling service plans?

Accidental Damage from Handling Protection (ADH) plans offer the same benefits as the Regular Extended Service Plans but gives the added benefit of repairing or replacing your Sony product when it malfunctions due to breakdowns that occur from handling the product under normal operating conditions.

This Service Plan includes all parts, labor and shipping costs in its coverage to make sure your Sony product is repaired and delivered back to you without any out-of-pocket costs. Coverage begins on the date you purchased the product and runs concurrently with the Limited Warranty.

Why add your Extended Service Plan today?

Extended Service Plans run concurrently with the Limited Warranty so the later you purchase the Service Plan, the less coverage you will receive. Adding your Service Plan today ensures confidence in full product protection and entitles you to value pricing. Also, select Extended Service Plans are only offered at the time of product purchase. Plans that must be added on at the time of model purchase include any accidental damage from handling plans. These Service Plans are not offered for stand-alone purchase and cannot be purchased after you have bought your product.

Also, purchasing Extended Service Plans at a later date requires a valid proof of purchase and are only available within the first 6 months of your product purchase.

All Sony Extended Service Plans are offered, administered and fulfilled by Service Net Solutions, LLC and Service Net Solutions of Florida, LLC. See Terms and Conditions for complete details.

Just one question:

What should be the average dimensions of the JPGs without this workaround? Thanks!

Ciao!!

Hello,

Where, within the menu options, is the select/adjust for this sharpness, etc... setting?

Thanks - Ponz

Around these parts, there are posts (Kiklop, 2008 April 21 at 14:43, polyglot, 2009 Feb 9 at 02:36, seagr112, 2008 Feb 8 at 19:16) about setting the JPEG options (contrast, brightness, sharpness, etc) such that the histogram would be close to the raw data. I failed in my search (Dyxum or otherwise, via Google) of those settings.

Does anybody know what those settings may be besides not using DRO and using "Neutral" "Creative Style" ?

To put things as simple as i can we need to set the camera settings to be as "dull looking" as possible;
- aRGB color space
- low contrast
- low brightness
- neutral CS
- a tad lower saturation

That's part of the setting we can set however; what does influence (a lot!) camera histogram as well is the WB setting. For that we need to understand that WB has nothing to do with raw data; WB is only a manipulation of raw data in post processing just as contrast, brightness, sharpness and ever color space is. So, what we want in this respect is to cancel WB completely. To do that we use a so called "uni-wb" setting, which is kind of "native WB" every sensor has. I think this topic is covered elsewhere on this forum (may be for a900 but the principle is the same).

I think I found the thread on native white balance: Getting more out of the camera histogram.

Thanks for the reply & above post.

I've just upgraded from a KM 5D to Alpha 700 and was surprised when I spotted over-aggressive NR on a RAW file http://www.flickr.com/photos/dlsmith/3308966541/ at 1:1. Thanks to this thread I was able to work out that it was ACR 4.2 that caused it. In the Sony RAW converter I saw noise not smudging, so I downloaded ACR 5.2 and this shows as same. Shame that there is noise at ISO 800 though

I have a couple of questions, to maximise quality:

a) should I turn DRO off?
b) which Creative Style should I use?

Thanks in advance
