Hello,
on monday I got my A700. And to get a feeling about the parameters that can be tweaked with the A700 I made some testpictures. I arranged a scene that was shot on tripod with 50mm/1.7 at f5.6. There are test series of ISO from 100-6400, from sharpening -4 to +4, std fine and xfine format, raw and craw and further more. These set are 32 pictures with different parameters that can be found on: http://a700.makrograf.com/ I want to thank baerlichkeit for his work on this site! Have fun gnupublic |

It is not often you could categorise test pics as works of art, but the thoroughness with which your testing has been done deserves that sort of accolade. Thanks very much Volker.
And welcome to Dyxum, if it has not been said before. Edited by brettania - 11 October 2007 at 19:07 |

Thanks for posting. The high ISO performance is very nice. Even the 3200 you posted looked good.

Great work, interesting to see the DRO in action, even if it is not the ideal image for it, the AUTO mode does a very good jobb.
I think iso 6400 can be usable if you want some nice BW. ISO 3200 is usable in color. |

Thanks so much for posting this link. The center crops of each pick side by side was very helpful. JPEG sharpness looks excellent to me, especially when set at +1 or +2. Thanks to those that put the time in to take all those test pictures and put them online. Well done.

Great work, thanks for all the effort you have put into these tests.
For people who shoot jpegs and do little pp, these tests show that with sharpening set to +2 or +3 it not only makes the image sharp but it removes the mushiness bringing out the details in the image. Had one question. The images used for the high iso shots ( 1600 +), are these out of the camera jpgs or did you convert them form the RAW? If so which RAW converter did you use? |

Thanks for the test pics. My test also indicated that a +2 for sharpness is a good level. I use +1 sat, +1 contrast and +2 for sharpness.

Hi,
I'm reading dyxum for over a year now, it's time to become a little more active, I think
For those who wondered: all images except the raw's titled as raws, are JPGs out of the cam with the described settings... There are also two raw files of the A100+D7D for comparison available now. Feel free to use them and share your thoughts.
greetings from Germany Andreas |

Many thanks for linking to that test- just exactly what I've been waiting for- really thorough. The high ISO performance particularly was a pleasant surprise, even after everything that's been said about it- it easily surpasses even my best expectations. I can certainly think of times on dull days when it would have got me out of a serious hole if I'd had it!

Welcome to you too, Andreas. Let's hope we can lure you both out of "test mode"! |

Shooting test images is tedious and time consuming I realize.
Nevertheless I have one suggestion. Fron the exif it is clear than the iso tests were all shot at the same illumination. In actual use, it is more likely the higher iso will be used at lower illumination. I suuggest shhoting an iso series that holds aperture and shutter constant at a likely real world value (for example f4 at 1/250), then vary illumination and iso for correct exposure. Vary illumination by shielding the light source or using a dimmer switch. |

It would be interesting to see low-light shots, I agree. Certainly when I'm using high ISOs it is because the light is poor, rather than because I'm using extremely high shutter speeds and closed apertures. ISO 800 at 1/250 and f2.8-f4 is a grim place I often find myself in in the winter months.
