Ok - first on thread (to keep pegelli happy). So far the A7 has cycled every twoish years - but there's a sample size of one - so whats that mean? Not much I suppose.

Anyway, my guess is a new A7III series around oct-nov 2017.

1. i line with current release cycles
2. novelty of A9 will have worn off and sony will want to be in news again
3. sony will be keen to iterate the e mount to keep momentum up and protect against potential canon mirrorless push - and perhaps spike a rumored annuncement from them.

On the other issue - its odd reading cliff, artuk, miranda etc and seeing us arrive at polar opposite positions while looking at the same info. Which got me thinking - are we looking at the same data and I dont thiink so. Im not goingto repeat all my previous posts, rather here's a quick list of areas my analysis is different.

1. I dont care what sony SAID - there annoouncements dont figure in my thinking at all.

2. I think we have to look harder at timelines. for me, the decision dates just dont make sense - how can sony have 'broken their crank' o the slts when the a77 was only released 20 months before the A7?

3. We need to consider whole ecosystems, not just bodies. Look at how lenses etc were released, how have the systems of lenses been designed.

4. We need to consider beyond stills photo's and consider intergation of cine ad camcorders.
We are all going to die but at least we can go down swinging

If there's a web forum where only things that matter are discussed, I want to know about it.

PMac we agree, as do the rumors coming out of Sony, that a7iii will release late this year. That's two Moore cycles, enough to make the a7ii obsolescent. It will be interesting to see how that mixes with a9 releases and promotions. That could be a fine needle to thread.

I recently got an a6500. It makes my a7ii seem dated, although it does not replace ff. For features I'd guess a lot like the a6500 with a couple of bits (not sensor and processing core) from the a9, and one or two features new for the a7 series. Batteries have been such a sore point, it seems likely new cameras going forward will inherit that from the a9.

The mechanical shutter is among the last remaining mechanical pieces. A9 took a big step towards making it redundant, but did not quite get there. Be interesting, and big news, if Sony made enough progress to drop it in the upcoming a7iii. That would be a significant cost reduction as Sony continues to make money through electronics that cost less than mechanics to produce and assemble.

I saw something on a camera (not Sony) with electronic IBIS recently. If Sony can implement that it would take another piece of cost, size, and complexity out of the equation. Lens Rentals tear downs of a7 and a7ii were dramatic. a7 was elegant, neat and simply laid out. The a7ii was a mess of cables, IBIS parts and pieces everywhere.

Engineers are all about solving problems, and my hat's off to Sony's for the amazing job they have done. Wonder if there are still old Minolta folks in the mix or if it's all homegrown Sony these days.

Well, we've got the A7Riii. Looks like a wonderful camera. It got many of the improvements from the A9 box like joystick, battery and dual card slots. It has improved viewfinder, and pixel shift shooting to give effectively almost 170mp! It also has slick little technical hacks like sensing incandescent/florescent lighting and timing exposures to prevent ac flicker, an additional stop of stabilization to 5.5, and a new shutter.
Specs here: https://www.sonyalpharumors.com/

All in all it looks like Sony did a wonderful job picking up a9 features for the a7 upgrade without cannibalizing the a9. It's at about the same price point of the A7Rii. Now, when will we get the a7iii and a7siii?
