Oh thanks, I've been waiting for this, if only to justify my decision to sell all my Canon gear and buy it. Loving it so far, with the exception of flash control options!

They really like the camera, and the few things they criticize are fair - like the small coverage of the selectable AF points. Never thought I'd see DPreview compliment Sony's JPEG quality!

Nice, it got a gold star. And it scored 84%, same score as the Nikon D800E.

Page 13, RAW noise, ISO3200 & "Up through ISO 6400, there is little meaningful distinction between them in luminance noise."
The next-door Canon 5D mk 3 looks less noisy by some margin. (Except that the Canon's blue is kind halfway purple.) Am I looking at the picture wrong? Nice to see innovation get a good score from a thorough review though. |

Bugger, thought I might be first.
I should have known better! Look at the nice gold award!! Congrats to Sony and the A99. Now stop whining and go shoot even if you don't have one. I'm laying here cuddled with my lowly '900.

I had an opportunity to see my first a99 today. Local dealer had one in box.
First... The EVF is fantastic. Much much much nicer than NEX-7. They put a very high quality viewfinder magnifier in that. But, in the 10 minutes I had, neither I or the sales clerk could figure out how to turn off all viewfinder info for just a blank screen. Got it to the point of settings effects on, with blank screen, but the face tracking box was always active and very disturbing to me. I know it can probably be turned off, but the experience was frustrating. I've never not been comfortable around a 9 series. I was very disappointed that a menu dive was required just to turn on/off SSS. I wish the switch was there on the back. So then I thought, ok, I'll support the new 9... stick with the platform and let this a99 move me gently into the future. But then I remembered that no definitive answers have arisen for legacy flash support, HSS/TTL radio slaves, third party systems... and I just couldn't bring myself to purchasing a camera that would bring so many questions into my business. I'll consider a99 when (if) the issues of flash functionality have been answered fin. Then the young man said something wise for his age... "Why would you want to make this camera work like an a900, if you already have an a900"? I love young man wisdom. Sometimes it makes a lot of sense. I'm still having trouble getting over the fact that Sony will not release a D800 version of an a900. And now the announcement of FF roadmap being pushed back another year has me considering things I never wanted to consider. Updating with Sony right now forces me to play a lot of make believe. |

To Photosopher:
I've had a99 for a month. Answering your questions. You can set up the EVF to be as clear as possible by setting up the display button (DISP) in the menu, when you press it looking into the EVF it'll switch between your choice of EVF info overlays, one of which is CLEAR, you may leave as many or as little display configurations as you want for EVF and SCREEN individually. Menu choice N2 under the Gear wheel (3rd tab). Quick navi allows to switch Steady Shot off/on and Face Detection without menu diving, make sure to hit DISP button to see the traditional info screen/not live view on the screen. A77 and now a99 are overwhelmingly complex, you will have to "peal off" features you don't use. It took me about a month to tame a77 and set it to my liking, when a99 arrived I set it up the way I want in 5 minutes. |

Great review. It seems that Sony has caught up or even exceeding Canon and Nikon in many areas excluding AF performance.

Nice review. Iso performance (even though i expected a much larger improvement ) and DR is most attractive, jpeg performance, x-sync, evf, no CF card, battery performance not so.

Every full frame camera has got a Gold award from DPR recently. If you give awards away like candy they cease to mean much.
Camera looks nice enough, surprised the cons list does not mention battery drain. Price is a problem, and DPR seem to try "too hard" to convince people to love EVF's, brochure talk is never welcome in reviews. |
