Hello,

I just received a 50mm 1.7 lens from Ebay and the blades are oily. Is it hard to fix them on your own? I just read the howto thats on the internet, but im scare to pull it apart. Is there anyone in South Florida that could maybe help me pull it apart and clean it?

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks

Try this

Edit: Have done it myself on both the 50 1.4 and 1.7. Took me about 3 hours the first time. A little careful the first time. Read only petes instructions carefully so you can fix it. Using chemically pure petrol (White-gas?) to remove the oil.

Unless you got a spectacular deal, if the oily blades were not mentioned, I'd return it. Why go through the hassle? There is no shortage of 50mm lenses here or on ebay.

I had the same thing happen to me about a year ago with a 28mm f2.8 Minolta lens. I took it to a local camera shop (So.Cal.) known for excellent work and it cost about $65 to have it cleaned.

Hope this helps with your decision.

Hopefully you got a good deal on it. If you paid full price (~100 US), and weren't advised that it had oily blades, then you should either send it back for a refund, or ask for atleast half of your money back.

If you get half of your money back, then, if you can fix it, it becomes a very good deal. If you don't think you can fix it, or are too scared to try, then I would insist on a refund, including the return shipping as it is the sellers fault for shipping you a defective item.

Absolutely right, it is "NOT AS DESCRIBED" and should be returned or at least partial refund of $50-$75 for service & repair.

I think the 50/1.7 is the easiest lens to disassemble and re-assemble. As long as you don't lose any screws and that tiny little spring under the chip, you should be fine.

I found the hardest part is to open the front rim. I did not have the grip tool in Pete's guide, but someone suggested to use a bathtub drain plug and it works wonderfully.

Good luck. It is fun.

I personally wouldn't want to go through the hassle of cleaning it, especially if I paid a fair amount for it. So I'd go for other people's suggestions here, return it for not describing it.

80 bucks for two 50/1.7? Nice deal!

Well I guess you can go clean the other one yourself then! ;)
