Topic: Backpack with split compartmentsPosted: 27 January 2012 at 20:18 |

Now I'm soon to give up, but I thought I should give it a last try here on dyxum.
I'm looking for a backpack with split compartments, one for my photo gear and one for spear clothes, food, bottle of water and the necessities of my girlfriend (maybe not all at the same time though, as the latter can occupy some space ). The alternatives I've found are:Lowepro DryZone Rover Lowepro Versapack 200 AW Kata DR-467I Kata DR-465 Naneu Pro Alpha Lowepro Photo Sport I really like the looks of the last one (it is actually a bit important ). But my problem is; the camera compartment is at the bottom, and I would like to have the camera compartment on top! What if I drop my backpack a bit hard on the ground? And also for me, having the camera compartment on top would give me better accessibility for the camera (I find it more convenient). So, do you have any tip or recommendations that could meet my needs? |

Sorry that I don't have that much experience with camera bags to help you out here, but thought it would be important to know how much camera gear you are wanting to carry?
Just a thought... a lot of camera bags have movable flexible compartment seperators that you could reorganise to meet your needs perhaps? I have a Lowepro Flipside 400 AW that has a seperate zipper compartment that you can fit a reasonable amount of stuff, in but isnt too big, so then you could change around the seperators in the main compartment so you can put clothes etc in the lower half & still have space for a camera body & a few lenses above - I can fit 2 3/5 series bodies with Tamron 70-300 & zeiss 16-80 affixed then 4/5 average & smaller lenses & 42AM flash with everything properly seperated to give you an idea of the size..... Just a thought Edited by Tanglefoot - 27 January 2012 at 20:56 |

If you have to ask the price then you are obviously far too sensible & will never pay the stupid price we are asking for it. |

Maybe you can take a look at military style modular gear by Maxpedition, Hazard4 or Voodoo, or go cheap and try Condor or Flyye. You can have a sling bag or backpack and add all kinds of pockets and pouches to it.

I love the flipside 400 AW also. Great bag on your back.
If you look here you will find all kinds of backpacks WITH room for a daypack. The site is in german but pictures are universal.. You can select them on kind : nach Art sortiert or on manufactory: nach Hersteller sortier |

I was taking a serious look at the Lowepro Photo Sport 200 AW the other day. It's a really nice bag, but I'd say the photo compartment is too small, unless you are taking a minimalist kit. I currently use a Lowepro Rover which is very comfortable, has proper technical straps, holds enough gear and can be customised with additional pouches etc.

Forgot to tell you that. I usually carry my A700 with VG and the Sigma 17-70 attached. But I would like to be able to mount my 70-300 G and store it without any problems. When using the 17-70 the 70-300 G and the SAL 11-18 will probably keep each other accompanied in the back pack. So in short form: A700+VG with 17-70 70-300 G SAL 11-18 Tripod And I have to be able to store A700+VG with 70-300 G when using it. |

Perhaps the tenba g3 backpack. I believe you can switch the camera insert out to the top pocket if u prefer. One thing to keep in mind with that arrangement is then your bag will be very top heavy. Not always a good thing. But I will do a Lil research for you. I love camera bags. Sigh...

I have a Naneu K3L for this purpose which I think is a great bag, although camera compartment is on the bottom again. There's a K4L too which is larger.

I like the Tamrac daypacks for this purpose. Hold misc. stuff up top, photo gear at the bottom.
Scroll down to Adventure 6 and onward. Adventure 8 and up adds a pocket for computers. |

The subject of backpacks and shoulder packs rises occasionally and then continues, again, forever, in the hope of finding a bag which will make carrying gear easy and comfortable. I regard it as a search for the Holy Grail.
In response to this search, I have developed Jocelynne's First Law of Photography: "There is no back pack or shoulder pack which will please you." The corollary to Jocelyne's First Law of Photography is: "No back pack or shoulder pack will reduce the mass of your gear." Good shooting...and carrying Edited by Jocelynne - 28 January 2012 at 06:06 |

So i currently have a Crumpler 8 million dollar home and a Lowepro classified 180. neither of these are in your category but i have to say for my build and gear the LOWEPRO is pretty amazing. it WILL NOT fit clothes or anything more than your gear and a small laptop or tablet. but it's pretty awesome.
The bag i have seen with the highest reviews and the bag that makes me lust the most is INCASE's ARI bag, co-designed by photographer ARI MARCOPOULOS. And again it will not hold clothes and etc...but it seems like a pretty amazing combo of design beauty and general day-to-day usefulness. |

There are plenty of backpacks that will do this.
Another one is the Kata Bumblebee 222-UL.

One of the concerns I would have about gear on top is that photo gear tends to be the most heavy items I carry in my bag. Think about how uncomfortable that would be with all strain put on your shoulders.
