wow, coincidentally, the seller and the OP have the same name...........
Does your lens have a slightly sticky aperture? Did anyone else notice that the photo of the flower becomes brighter as the lens is stopped down? Edited by spada - 13 July 2010 at 15:11 |

---
3 three months ago I had a chance to get this lens. I did search about this lens, but don't have too much information about it, so I opened a topic about this lens. After I bought it, I did post some sample pictures (2 months ago). After more than 2 months of using the Jena lens, I have decided to sell it on ebay (but I did not post it on sale here). Is it not OK to do that? I am really confused ------------------------------------------------------------------
NO, there is no oil on the blades as you can see in the pictures ;) Edited by tuanle - 14 July 2010 at 06:34 |

The beercan is an over rated "cult" lens. Pretty good at that, but nowhere up to its highly biased cult hype. |

Looking at the larger pictures further down the page it is actually the Sigma version and not branded Carl Zeiss or Jenna in any place I can see. |

That sounds like a highly biased opinion to me. I love my beercan, not for its nickname but for the IQ. |

I think that must be a biased opinion also, and I can't think of a better full frame telephoto lens for under 100 dollars. The two beercans I have bought have been for under 100, and the image quality with both is quite stunning. I will try to take some similar shots of flowers to compare with this zeiss/sigma lens. |

The Beercan has one of the best price:performance ratios of any lens, comparable to a 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.7. If I need f/2.8 or I'm shooting something with a lot of contrast, I reach for my Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8. If not, I reach for the Beercan. Right tool for the job and all that.

The beercan is OK, but nowhere around its hugely overinflated reputation, a reputation which mostly comes from this very forum. It's a self-confirming myth you have going on here. In the old days, this lens was seen as a good alternative and recommended because it was somewhat better or as good as then-current lenses, while being significantly cheaper. It's still as good as then, but other alternatives now exist and it's no longer a bargain because it's not cheap. The used bargain to hunt for now is the 100-200/4.5.
The beercan: * is pretty good but not awesome in any way I can come to think of * purple fringes like there's no tomorrow * has pretty harsh bokeh * is not close to competing with any pro glass The good things about it is mostly that it focuses pretty close and is a versatile lens. |

Everything you say is true, but the major factor is that other than the Beercan we don't have ANY modern equivalent like other systems have. |

I'm quite sure there are two versions of this lens with different coatings. My beercan doesn't show purple fringing. It's in this respect better than the 17-35D that was introduced in the digital age. Others also report that they don't have purple fringing. The beercan is slowly getting to reasonable prices again - it used to be quite inflated. Still, a nice lens. |
