It does seem to me that the Kindle Fire supports mass-storage USB but not USB host connection,
so it can not connect to USB storage devices, but you could connect it to a USB host device as if it was a portable hard-drive and copy files to it, I do not know if your A900 or A700 support this.

The Kindle doesn't seem to have any way to access external storage. No SD slot, no USB host for mass storage ability (USB is PC/MAC hookup and charging only). The only way would be through Wifi. A wireless harddisk with a CF slot or USB host, but I don't think that even exists.

You might try something like this and the beauty is you won't need your kindle at all.

http://www.bigpockets.co.uk/product.php?product=BELKIN109

Its discontinued there but I saw that this ebay seller in Uk has 2

@Hobglobin: I looked into those devices too quite some time ago. Things might have changed, but all of them were USB 1.1 speed, so pumping over a 4 GB card would take 45 minutes at best.

I have (but don't use it anymore) a Look LK-A3 portable USB2 harddrive with OTG/On-The-Go USB port (so it connects to a USB card reader). I don't remember how fast it was, but I believe it was limited by the drive that was in it at some 4-5 MB/s. A 1 GB transfer took about about three minutes. There are other OTG HDD devices like these.

Yes it is USB 1 (at least mine is) and time would be quite long for a 4GB card but the OP said that where he was staying there would be power but no internet. So I guess no problem to make transfer while eating or even sleeping. Plus of course actual time would be determined by how often you make transfers, card would likely not be full up most times.

Have you looked at the Sanho hyperdrive products?
The one I purchased has a SD and compact flash slots and will copy the entire contents of a card in a few minutes.

I do not have an Ipad (yet) so I can't comment on the ability of moving files to/from and IPAD.

hmm.. any one of those would fit the bill quite well. my only concern is the reliability issue. are there any with some sort of screen, even if analog to show that all the files were transfered. rather than just hope it got everything. also, price may also be an issue. if it is near $50 i might just get a second hand netbook instead. ill research more of those products when i get home.

regarding the ipad, that is the reason i am in this situation. my dad has one and i bought the usb adapter hoping that i could transfer files to and from my external hard drive, turns out you can transfer from the hard drive but not to it. solutions online mentioned using dropbox, and icloud, etc. but all them require some sort of internet access.

Yes the hyperdrive does have a screen that reports the progress of files as they are transferred.
The hyperdrive also provides the ability to open and display files, including raw files.

Hyperdrive does both incremental and full backups for cards.
I think a Hyperdrive case without a hard drive is about $200, you add a 2.5" sata harddrive (another $100). I used a 160 gig drive that I had from a laptop upgrade.

I have a netbook that I considered taking before I bought the hypredrive, the issue I'd with my netbook is the lack of disk space, does not have a lot of free space after the operating system. There is also the issue of manually doing the backups or the automated functions of the hyperdrive.

In addition to the hyperdrive I took my macbook pro providing me the ability to review my shoots each evening.

There are other Android Tablets, for instance the Asus Transformer, that can however connect to external USB mass storage, I do not know about iPad/iPod touch.
Otherwise a netbook would certainly do the job and they typically have a 250GB HD.
If you do not need the personal computing capability while traveling, an image tank would indeed be a more compact and rugged alternative.
