Software Simple Photo Managers If you are not very experienced with computers or post processing, you might prefer an easy to use solution over more powerful ones. Such a program is Google Picasa. It allows basic photo editing with a easy to use interface and supports direct uploading to Picasa Web Albums which is a very straight forward way of sharing your photos online. A similar program is Photoshop Album Starter Edition from Adobe. It lets you do some basic tweaks along with tagging, grouping and archiving your photos. PhotoFiltre, Photoscape and Paint.NET are also notable programs. RAW converters RAW format is sometimes called the digital negative because a RAW file cannot be viewed directly, it must be processed in order to obtain a viewable picture of them. RAW Converters are tools which process RAW files with various parameters that you can adjust, once finished the result is saved in a picture format like JPEG or TIFF. A notable RAW converter is UFraw which is a totally free open source project for Mac users. Photography Workflow Software Workflow programs are relatively new in the market. They combine the power of a professional raw converter, image editor and archive management system. By this integration, they aim to deliver all that a photographer needs in a single, easy to use package. However they generally lack the sophisticated editing features of image editing suites. Important workflow programs are Bibble, Adobe Lightroom and Apple Aperture. Image Editing Suites These programs have a very wide scope, extending beyond photography into graphical design, web design, arts and more. They provide the most powerful image processing tools for a photographer. However their complexity is their drawback, a photography enthusiast is unlikely to use most of the features found in them. Two most important image editing suites are the freeware GIMP and the commercial Adobe Photoshop. I've been a user of Paint Shop Pro for the ten years it's been around, up to X2.

It's a great program. I do a lot of photo processing after RAW conversion (for which I use Bibble), and there's virtually nothing I couldn't do with PSP. I use plugins such as FocusMagic (sharpening) and NeatImage (noise reduction), which are better that Photoshop PS4... but from time to time I'll use PSP's built in functions, which are quite adequate for most people.

Except for professional use, I believe PSP X2 is a much better value than any Photoshop version.

Have you considered tethered shooting to your laptop (assuming you have one) and then connecting that to your TV or allowing them to view your laptop/computer? You can shoot tethered to LR or simply a folder on your hard drive

Pardon, but I think it'll be better to use 'FOSS' or 'Free Software' term since 'Freeware' (in common usage) tends to refer more often to proprietary and closed source software, sire, while the GIMP are not.

Dyxum members might like to know that the long awaited RAWTherapee 3.0 is now available. This doesn't compare with PS and the like, but it will do most things you would expect to do with a RAW file except image manipulation. It uses the same base program as the major RAW programs and hence is kept up to date with the latest camera models. It will also open jpeg files. Contact:
