Can be good to wait until both lenses are available and reviewed. 105mm (150mm FF) is great travel lens, greater than 70mm (105mm FF) and both lenses will probably cost about 1000 USD. Differense between wide end 16mm ... 18mm (24mm ... 27mm FF) can be not so important.

Rumored 16-70 has 55mm filter and 18-105 72mm filter. So 18-105 is really bigger and heavier.

I tried few days ago my Canon FD 3,5/35-105 manual focus lens with nice non-optical adapter and was expecting, that my best zoom from 1987-2002 mounted on Canon A-1 SLR is great to use with NEX croped sensor again, so it means I will not think about e-mount native zoom acquire, as my e-mount 24/1,8 Zeiss in mounted about 80% of the shots and wider end I use not much can be covered with 18-55 kit. But I disappointed lot. This lens from the past can't compite with a-mount 3,5-4,5/16-80 Zeiss from 2007 at all. The centre is not as sharp as Zeiss, even at F8. The edges and corners are distorted as much as with e-mount 18-55 kit lens and even more. The Canon lens color rendering is incomparable with a-mount 16-80 and e-mount 18-55 kit.

It is worth to wait native contemporary lenses with OSS for existing NEX models or as alternative, rumored newer NEX models with in-body image stabilisation to replace existing, if there are a-mount lenses or great older primes in the bag.

FYI, updated rumor with pics. link

It looks like this will be optically stabilized.
Here you can also get a sense of size from these pics. The zeiss is far smaller than the 18-105, but far bigger than the 16-50 e-mount lens (no surprise in either case.) It looks like it's a bit bigger than the kit 18-55.

I'm all about small size on e-mount, but I dislike the 16-50 PZ. I want a lens to feel like a lens and not like a P&S camera. I want to have a focus and a zoom ring (for zoom lenses). If I had the $, I might actually consider the zeiss, in part because there aren't many good zoom options for NEX. But I wish the size was smaller! You'd think the Sony/Zeiss could put together a top quality compact zoom that wasn't a PZ like the 16-50.

NEX7 + 24/1,8Z + coming 16-70Z OSS - surely the best combo I ever had.

While I'm with you on the zoom range (loved my SAL 16-105), jusding by the fact that the front element diameter is 72mm, I think it is designed for video. That's a big lens.

Wow, these 16-70 & 18-105 are so big, I think they are more suitable on the possible new SLR size E-mount cameras

Hi Gustav, can you say if the new camera has:

1. Alpha menus?
2. Tilt screen?

Also did you get any indication of ball-park pricing of the new lens?

Thank you so much for sharing!
