A Nikon friend has sent me a link to a you tube vid shot with the d4. I have to say it is rather good!

I'm on my iPad at the mo so haven't got the correct link but the video is called " Nikon D4 HD - D Movie - WHY ATHLETES"

Nikon's only FX release with more MP was the D3x, which interestingly used a Sony sensor that was also used (with minor alterations) in the A900 and the A850. The A900 and A850 were not really competition for the D3 and D3s, and I doubt Sony has any intentions of actually competing with the D4. The D3x does compete with the A900 more directly, as does Canon's 1Ds MkIII, but those cameras are targeted at a different market.

The other part of your argument is that Nikon is concentrating on high ISO performance over high resolution, but I do not see any clear evidence of that either. It seems that ISO performance may have largely stood still between the D3s and D4. The hints about better skin tones may even suggest that ISO performance may be compromised by wanting to get a bit better color separation (a trend I would welcome). If Nikon really wanted to emphasize ISO over resolution they could have gone to a 10 MP FX DSLR, now that would have really raised a lot of eyebrows.

A850, Schneider 28/2.8 PC, Sony 50/1.4 & 85/2.8, Sigma 105/2.8 macro, Minolta 200/2.8 & 1.4x TC(D).

+1

First image results apparentlyshow that the D4 is not so much better in the high ISO department as to convince current D3 owners to upgrade.

Just look over the Nikon forum on dpreview and you will find a lot of people (at least it seems to be a lot when you go by the numerous threads that have been started over the last couple of days) who are disappointed with the upcoming D4. The only real advantage seems to be a perhaps faster AF. GPS is missing; high ISO is not so much better than to make a huge difference and some more.

One thing though that I really would love to see on the next Sony is the backlit buttons for shooting in the dark. Obviously there are other things that I would like to see improved but that's a neat feature to have.

As always the people discussing the cameras are very seldom the ones who will use them first hand.

Stef you seem somewhat obsessed with showing Nikon and Canon has noise on their forums, have you used a D3 or a Nikon pro series body ? If not you have no real clue what the changes of the D4 will translate in practice, anyone missed the new grip, the faster af, the connections, etc.

Sure average joe doesn't care about these things, nor is it's targeted at him.

If I had a spare $6k laying around, I'd get it just for the RJ45 jack. And the HTTP mode has amazing possibility.

Just remember: For $6k, you could get 3 A850s, and use two of them just as AF-assist slaves, and focus in similar conditions the D4 can.

Being also a D300 shooter and frequent visitor at Nikoncafe, most everyone sees the D4 as an overpriced non-event.
All the excitement is over the new Fuji offering.

Unfortunately the low light ability will be lost on the D4 user, who can no longer lift the camera or get to shoots on time after selling an arm and leg !

Cameras like the D4 are tools for pros or people with too much money.

Have to admit I was intending to get the D3s now that I have sold all my Sony gear but the D4 looks very tempting
All the best

Has anyone seen the connectors of XQD card yet?
Are they of SD style or pins like CF?
all the shiny press images only show the cards form the side.

Found a mention in this article that says 'no pins'.
Also searching around I found that both San Disk and Lexar will not be making XQD cards for some reason.

'I'd wager it will be capable of taking great photos in places that Sony users won't even bother to get their camera out.'

Tripods? An aversion to shooting black cats in a coal mine? An awareness of the quality trade-offs intrinsic to high ISO imagery?

I'll take the A900 colour separation over noise fetishism any day of any year. And, there is no substitute for megapixels, if you shoot detailed landscape. Context sensitivity rules OK.
