Hello,

I've been shooting on my A580 with a Tamron 17-50mm without any problem for almost a year but since yesterday, i can no longer focus with it! The problem happened all of sudden and i have no idea why as i didn't change any of the settings and i am still on autofocus, not manual.

The focus works perfectly with the Sony 50mm lens by the way.

What can i do? I've tried cleaning the lens and i've tried resetting the camera settings, but i still can't autofocus with the Tamron.

Thanks so much for any help!
Emma

Did you clean both the lenscontacts and the contacts on the body?
Can you manual focus?
Can you take pictures with it/does the camera recognizes it?
Do you have access to another alpha-mount camera? (an older Minolta AF Maxxum/Dynax film camera will do)? Does it work?

Is the camera switch set to AF? If the Sony lens is SAM or SSM the body switch has no effect, however it will shut off the screw drive on the Tamron. Maybe the switch was inadvertently switched to MF?

Hi there,

And thanks for the responses. To answer your questions:

- Yes, i cleaned the lenses and contacts but to no avail.

- Even when i'm in manual focus, there is no longer the green light that indicates something is in focus... which makes it hard to know if it is or not, only looking at the screen.

- I can still take pictures with the camera - i don't have any message saying the lens is not recognized - but they will be imperfectly focused.

- The only other lens i have is the Sony 50mm, which continues to work fine on my camera. So it's a total mystery to me why this is happening out of nowhere!

- And yes, the camera is set to AF. I didn't change any of the settings on my camera, which is what puzzles me.

Any advice? I would be glad to even know what the problem is!!

It worked for a year; now it doesn't. Sometimes things just fail.

Call Sigma for warranty repair. You don't list a location, but Sigma US service is very responsive.

ehh, think you'll be making matters worse if you send the Tamron lens to Sigma for servicing.
But if you bought it new, it's still under warranty so I'd send it in. To Tamron that is

Oops. Disconnect between brain and fingers. In a feeble defense, I did say to call first so hopefully it wouldn't get as far as sending it.

Anyway, unless you can easily try the lens on a different camera just to nail down that it's the lens, I do think warranty is the way to go, rather than puzzle over it any more.

The six year Tamron Warranty is for lens sold by authorized US dealer and may be different elsewhere. (Your profile does not give a location.)

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I guess the problem must be with the lens then. Someone mentioned maybe the gears are stripped?

Anyway, i'm in Asia now so can't get it checked/fixed right away, but will do so at the earliest opportunity i get.

Thanks again!

do a factory reset on the camera.

When i first got my A580 it had a hiccup and was trying to do contrast detect auto focus in OVF mode and without a SAM/SSM lens attached.
Its not supposed to be able to do that and since I did a factory reset the problem hasn't recurred.
