Have you tried a re-install of the firmware?

Does that mean you can't do the menu reset?

I hate to sound like an old IT guy (although I have to confess to being one), but have you tried turning it off and on again? Removing battery and doing the same?

Hi Bob, Thanks for helping - I have tried turning on and off and removing battery etc - do you know of a way in ie a combination of button presses whilst switching on that will reset everything ? Cheers

When you switch off the camera via main switch the red access lamp will light up, try to pull the battery out at exactly this point in time; at least normally the camera looses its date&time then, indicating a reset.

The limiting factor of image quality rather will be the inability of the photographer than the clearly distinct shortcomings of the camera ;-)

Thanks for your help – I feel annoyed with myself as this camera was absolutely mint had has had very little use. I have had it a few days and downloaded some files to my PC and noticed it took forever so I checked the firmware and it was version 1.0 so having already had a D7 before so I knew that it required updating to version 1.10 e - so I blissfully upgraded the camera!! I now find myself in this pickle (I should have put up with the slow download speed)
Somewhere there is a maintenance program that will access this and unlock it hopefully? Or a sequence of button presses that gets it into engineering mode or something – anybody any ideas please?

Well a search tells me you should use a CF card thats just been formatted, create a DCIM folder and pop the update in there. Once the updates installed power off and remove the card before powering up again.

Thats what I can gather from this thread anyway: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1024&thread=12257743&page=4

You could try contacting the repair specialists mentioned at the following website

http://ca.konicaminolta.com/support/repair/index.html

Someone at one of them may have some suggestions.

Do you know what region firmware you were using? I wonder if the problem is due to using European firmware over another areas... If so trying the update with original region firmware might make things better.

The COO of the firmware makes no difference except to the language displayed.

I heard ages ago of someone thinking they had got around the problem, but most who encountered it had to get the camera serviced. What magic the repairman used, I don't know.

Good luck, and at this stage it really doesn't make much difference what you do.

I remember when I updated my firmware long ago there was a warning that interrupting the power supply to the camera during updating could cause damage to the CPU of your camera.

Depending on what happened to your original 7D, you may have the necessary spare part ready to hand. Wouldn't know how easy it would be to fit it though.
