Hi guys,

I've decided to play a little with a portable kit softbox and threw in the HVL 58, remote triggered. The only thing I was annoyed was the fact that after a while it went to 'Stand by'. Because of the messy type of the shoot(bathroom) and tight space I did not want to move the flash and redo the setup so I had to live with it. After finishing I've changed the custom function and now it performs 100% + to my expectations.

An excellent set Andrei. I hope it was a cheap wine!

Hi Andrei,

A very interesting series, though I can only just manage to hold back the tears at the amount of wine that must have been lost during this shoot...

I like the fluidity that you have managed to create in these - some better than others mind you - and I think you get close to the 'perfect swirl' in a couple of cases here. I love the red wine ones in particular - I think the gradation of colour in the thinner parts of the wine against the glass creates some lovely subtle colours and shades for example.

Of the white's, #'s 5 and 6 are my favourites - #5 especially for the inclusion of the base of the glass and the 'missed' pour adding a very pleasing route for the eye through the image. Of the red wine images, the first I think is super - the stream of red wine is almost glass like in the look you have t it and those two droplets just outside the bowl of the glass are so important. I also think that the space to the right is just right (and would be a great piece of advertising/writing space for a commercial image!). The only minor point (very minor!) is that the wine in the glass is a little 'heavy' but that really is about it.

A fascinating series and I would like to see more with, perhaps, a fuller 'swirl' to the glass if that's possible?

Thanks for sharing these and care to comment on the specific wines used here..? Just personal interest you understand!

Kind regards, Neil.

edit - the comments make so much more sense if one can sort one's left from right....

Hey Neil,
Thanks for the comments and suggestions on the 1st photo. I will try in PP to brighten up the 'heavy' part of the wine. I added some contrast and there I lost some detail of the wine in the glass. The best part is that I shot raw and I can play with the tones in the red however I wanted.

Related to the wine I must confess the I did not loose that much, the most half of liter of red wine. On the white one it's even less. The real problem was cleaning the mess after :-)

Both wines are dry(red 'Cabernet', white 'Feteasca Regala'- local variety)from local vineyard which is located in a renowned wine area in Romania. Halewood(which has it's origins in UK from what I know)has some big investments in this area and in Romania too and produces some very good wines.

I am proud of the wines produced in this vineyard since they have a very good quality even if the process is not strictly controlled like in a industrial facility. It respects the traditional ways of producing the wine and I begin to believe this is the its secret. Last year was one of the best years, especially for White.

If you plan to make vacations in Romania make sure you try some local wines and food. With some guidance on what to try (which I can provide with real pleasure) you'll be amazed. We have quite a few friends from UK who appreciate Romania, the food, the wine and hospitality and visit us year after year.

Cheers,
Andrei

# 5 fascinates me ...
I take away a sense of party, and excess ... maybe an adult version of the 'mop and bucket' scene from Disney's Fantasia.
Very well shot : )

BTW - what is the position of the light source? Is the face of the softbox the white background?

My favourite shot is #6 (despite preferring red wine myself). It's a real shame to waste a good wine (I know firsthand, as I visited their winery in Azuga a few years back ), but at least the scope (and results) was noble. Thre's something about the white wine shots that I like a bit less - the pourring stream of wine seems (intentionally?) discolored and with boosted contrast compared with the wine in the glass. This seems to work perfectly in #5, though, because the whole image is B&W.
