I did a flickr search for SAL-35f14g Here is the link, almost 100% should be that lens.

http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=SAL-35F14G&w=all

can also flickr search for sony 35mm f1.4 might be a bit less accurate as SAL-35f14g is pretty specific, haha.

Head says: buy a 35/2 - a sharper lens wide open and a lot cheaper. Heart says buy a 35/1.4 knowing it will probably be too soft wide open, but ...!

I have to say that this and the 135 1.8 are lovely lenses that should be in every camera bag. Wish my budget stretched that far!

Question is: are you happy with it?

That's a great image Andrew! Lovely.

A request.

What I would like to see is some pictures showing the apparent "softness" of the 35 1.4 at full aperture.

Reading the reviews, many seem to grumble about the 35 1.4 being a bit soft wide open, so are there any willing volunteers who would oblige with a set of pictures of a detailed subject (i.e. text) at 1.4 and at 2 and 2.8? With pictures displayed cropped at 100%. Preferably flash exposed or using a tripod (to avoid any question of shake). Any kindly Dyxumers oblige?

Just in case anyone says "but there are sample pictures with the lens reviews", there aren't any that I could be confident couldn't be put down to miss-focus or camera shake.

I too would like this lens and need a wide angle (20-35mm; wider than 2.8) that I can use wide open with confidence for available light work.

The bokeh looks good Andrew, how is it at 1.4?

Thanks so much Andrew, these pictures are very helpful. A good choice as there's near point, midpoint and distant objects to look at and compare.

I'm reassured that there seems to be good sharpness at 1.4. Reading the reviews, many people have complained of softness at 1.4, however, there seems little evidence of worrying softness here, granted the lens seems sharper at 2.0, that's to be expected I suppose.

The bokeh at 1.4 is just beautiful! Fantastic.

I'm finding it increasingly harder to justify not getting one... what will my bank balance look like when I do!

What you lose at 1.4 is mostly contrast (and of course a bit of sharpness). This can also be seen in the above examples. But you can actually use this as an effect...
In order to save money you might look around for a used Minolta 35/1.4 - I have been very happy with an original version which I got fairly cheap; I had to get it repaired but the repair wasn't expensive either.
