Hi guys,
I could really use your help on this. I have Sony A200, which I bought used two years ago. But now I was offered A450 with 1 year warranty and I am not sure if it is a good idea to upgrade. reasons for upgrade: I could use better low light performance live view (although limited on A450) it's time :) what I like about A200 is the build and size. The viewfinder is also pretty good in my opinion. Controls could be better. I would have to buy new vertical grip, change memory card system. Is it worth it? (my A200 is still in extended warranty until 2013, so I should be able to sell it for good cash) thanks guys |

Well I have not tried the a450.
How much are you budget for the new camera? If you want better high iso take a look at a580, much better then that you woun´t find right now when it comes to high iso. |

Personally I tend to look first to investing in lenses when trying to improve results.

I moved from an A200 to an A450. At lower ISOs the A200 definitely gives less noisy results and at higher ISOs the A450 is o.k. and definitely a step up from an A200. I also miss ISO100 on the A450.
Personally, given the range has changed since I bought the A450, I would save some money up and go for a A580/A35/A55 ? I'm pretty sure any of these will give you better high ISO performance than the A450 would and a bit more resolution too. Of course it all depends on your available budget. |

I agree. I really think you won't be satisfied from a200 - a450. If you really want to up-grade badly go to a580 or a560. There are other choices like SLT a55, a33, a35, a65 & a77. All those alphas better than a450 (my a view point). But better to look for better lenses.

Thanks guys, well a550 or a580 is nowhere here to find used and new would cost thrice as much...and SLT is a no no, I was dissapointed even with the A77...
I think I'll buy it... I just bought macro Tamron 90mm, so I can use the MF check live view function. Shame there's no tilt... |

A350 or A380 is not in the same class as the A450.
I stepped up from the A200 to the A450 myself. I'd recommend it. The A450 is a good camera for the price you usually pay for it. |

No its not, but if you can live with smaller OVF, 14 mpix CCD inside A380 is one of best ever made (at least for APS-C). I would take A380 over anything from Sony, except A900/A850. |

I have an A450 as one of my Sony DSLRs.
It's a great camera. Very easy to use; excellent results up to and including ISO 1600. Would I get another? Yes. |

I would get some hands on time with the A450 - then decide to give it a miss! Personally I think the ergonomics of it are awful - whereas the A200 is lovely.
I have just upgraded to an A500 (L260 in perfect condition) and that is a good upgrade (from A100, but Fiance has an A200 so I know hers well too) Didn't notice where you are based - but got mine from Computer Exchange in UK. Not saying their prices are always good - but their price for an A500 is! Other option I looked at was going up to an A700 - which can be had cheap(ish) now, but decided to save a bit more money for glass instead! PS - Although I agree with the idea of spending money on glass instead often, you have some great lenses already and it is easier to add a few more usables stops by upgrading the body if you have an older Alpha. |

I started out with an a100 then moved to a700 and when that was out for repairs I tried (in that order) new a290, used a500 and just recently a used a450 (live view is less important to me than the viewfinder size and max fps). Among the models I've owned the only alpha with truly awful ergonomics for all but the smallest hands is a290 (though a230/280/380 with their midget grip would be awfuller still
) while the a450/500 have IMHO gotten undeservedly bad raps. They're certainly not as all-encompassing in their functions compared to the earliest alphas but many aspects of their operation & ergonomics are genuine improvements over the a100/200 (a few even improve on the a700). The rear LCDs are larger & more accurate, dynamic range is wider than in the CCD-based alphas, AF is much quicker and more accurate, battery life is way way longer if you don't use live view, dual card slots lower your chances of being caught cardless or Mb-less, their dampened mirror slap really doesn't appear to need an MLU option, and you'll get double or more the fps. Myself I wouldn't pay more than 450$ or 350€ for one in excellent condition, as a hundred or two more would buy one of the even better & newer 3x/5x/5xx series models. Nevertheless, at their current price level on the used market, the a450 and a500 are both excellent value to me. Edited by pdeley - 12 December 2011 at 21:48 |
