My first assignment. Probably a bit silly to go for an advanced especially given the quality of the shots already posted, but I just bought some extension tubes again, so here goes.

Min 35-105 w/stacked extension tubes (13+20+36)
ISO100, 1/2 sec @ f8

Cheroot cigar, 6mm diameter, on paper, harsh LED torch to right with a few layers of bubble wrap to diffuse it a bit.

Spent ages trying to clone out a dust bunny that turned out to be a nose print on the screen from one of our cats, derp!

EDIT: Forgot to say - small vertical crop to balance composition.

@blackworx: That's a pass, Bruce. Your sensor is 15.7mm on the short axis and your 6mm cigar takes up about half.

Cheers... Brian

Would this pass the challenge?

It's shot with an a580 with Sony 55-200 SAM. I used the pop-up flash with my hand over it to diffuse the light and give it a warmer color. Worked great.

Only thing I'm worried about is I don't remember cropping this picture on both axis. I only think I cropped a little from the top due to some blown out highlights from the sun.

I'm curious to know if it'll pass or not.

If not, I'll try again soon :-)

Thanks and nice challenge!

Mark, The objective of Macro w/o macro is to get close to 1:1 without a macro lens but with cheap means like close up lens, reversed set up, extension tubes etc. Just using a tele lens close to MFD isn't enough. Secondly the idea is that you take the shots specifically for the assignment, no mining of your hard-disk for old shots and your cropping remark leads me that this is just an old shot that this is an older shot you thought might qualify.

You can find all the rules here, so take a look and we're looking forward to your next submission here.

Hi pegelli,

Thank you for your explanation.

It's not an old shot, shot last sunday and I checked: it's not cropped.

I'll read the rules again and try another one with some other method than zoom on MFD.

My apologies.

Mark

mvanrheenen: Mark, please also keep in mind that the sensor on your a580 is 23.4 x 15.6mm. In order to qualify as macro (i.e. 1:1 or better) a 12mm subject would have to occupy about half of the frame horizontally (or 3/4 vertically). For this assignment, it would help if you would provide information on the dimensions of your subject as well as the lens setup and exif.

Thanks... Brian

P.S. Welcome to Dyxum! It's great to see new members diving straight into the assignments.

@BertH: Sorry, Bert. Your A200 sensor is 23.6 x 15.8mm. In order to achieve macro status (1:1 or better) magnification for this assignment, your 18mm lozenge would have to span (more than) the entire vertical dimension of the frame. Please try again.

Cheers... Brian

I go straight for the advanced assignment :D mostly because my extension tubes arrived a few days ago.

So this pic is taken with an A200 + extension tubes(7,14,28) and kit lens(18-70)

It's a lens cap and the visible text is approx. 14mm which gives a magnification of about 1.67:1 and achieved with 6 euro tubes and kit lens.

Extremely minor cropping cause the I in Minolta was slightly visible.
