Ok! here´s my second try at this. I spent yesterday walking around Stockholm looking for 100:s, electricity and foreground intrest

a700 sig 17-70 @ 35 mm f 4 1/1250 sec ISO 200


same gear @ 26 mm f4 1/640 sec ISO 200

I'm not grading, just commenting. I think in the first the ship is more middle ground than foreground. Your second one will probably be a pass, I just wish it had more contrast. It's a little bland, but it looks like that's the light that you had. I play with levels or curves might help it out though. That pipe sticking out of the water is very distracting.

BTW, did you find any 100s or electricity?

Tnx p_man, maybe some electric but 100:s is a pain, found some nice old signs but they starded at 102

Your right about the light, is was not the best yesterday I have one more of the last one at f 11 but I like this one better.

BTW I have no idea what "pipe" you see??

@ChrBra: Crister, I'm afraid your search of Stockholm is not quite over. P_man has summarized the behind the scenes discussion of #1 pretty well. The ship is not quite foreground and, even if it were, it does not provide a context for exploring the background cityscape. The crown in #2 is nice in its own right, but doesn't help the viewer relate to the background (which is also OOF). I've found a good example of the sort of shot we're going for in the Best of 2009 Finalists "Cannon Beach - Oregon" by arny. I hope this helps.

Tnx Brian, this is harder than it sounds I thought that the Crown and Royal Castle combo was home safe would it make any differense if the whole scene was in focus

Christer, I think the main point we're looking for is a major attraction or part of the scene in the foreground which connects and leads the viewer to the background. I think the background in focus will help the connection and make it easier but it is not an absolute requirement. However I wouldn't be surprised if in the long run we'll have much more pictures being sharp front-to-back passing here as compared to ones where either the foreground or the background is outside the dof. Hope this helps.

Hi,
Some tries from the last couple of weeks. The colors are not the best, but I was looking for the assignment.

1.) I wish I could get closer so the stairs would be bigger.

2.) The bottom less lake in the middle of the Budapest. I kind of like the lake feeling in the front and the big house at the back.

Looking for the comments.

@defi90: Sorry, Misi. Niether shot works for this assignment. The second comes closer, but the dock does not invite the viewer to explore the rest of the scene. Please try again.

@NIKO: While the technique is typically applied to landscapes, I can imagine some indoor situations where it might be effective. The difficulty might be getting the DOF required to have the foreground object-of-interest and the background all in focus. Please remember, too, that this can not be a studio shot as the rules state that you look for "a pre-defined composition with foreground interest in the environment around you."

Well, here is my first attempt. It is a wide angle indoor shot. The background is not "in focus," but it is in focus enough for exploration of the elements involved for the entire scene I should think. What do you think, do I get a pass?

@NIKO: Sorry, NIKO. There really does need to be a scene to explore beyond the foreground and the mail doesn't provide context or lead the viewer anywhere. As I tried to indicate in response to your question about whether foreground interest might apply to an indoor shot, this is possible, but difficult to achieve. You will find far more opportunities with outdoor scenes. Please try again.
