NEW Basic Assignment #5: Shape/outline Silhouette

That's a pass Stinus, the sun flare adds a nice bonus to the picture.

@Dudger: Dave, I think you have answered your own question. Technically, it's a silhouette, but the assignment reads: Take a picture that accentuates the outline of a person or object, try to create an extra impact by making the shot idealistic, simplistic and perfectly executed.

All the detail in the structure distracts from the outline and keeps the image from taking on the "idealistic" and "simplistic" qualities expected for a pass. Please try again.

@Dudger: That's a pass. You have quite a few clipped highlights in the clouds. A lower exposure would have worked better for you here. Cheers... Brian

I am glad you like the shot and it is a pass. It is actually a found shot and it is not completely a set up. I went to a local Glass factory to see what I could capture and in their store found the following bird statues that hang on glasses:



At the entry of the store they had one of the statues sitting on a glass right in front of a light fixture with a white rectangular plastic shade. The shade had a great effect where it was bright in the middle and then became darker to the edges. I locked in my exposure metered off of the bright part of the light, crouched down to get an angle where the bird head was relatively in the center of the light, and then shot some test shots varying the exposure compensation. I adjusted until I got the desired balance of the bird silhouette and the glass edges showing up. I was shooting with the Sony 100mm Macro. The final shot was at 1/200s, 200 ISO, f/10, EV +2, 100mm, RAW, handheld. I increased the contrast slightly in the final picture, but there were no other edits.

@defi90: I like the photo, Misi, but I'm not sure it works well for this assignment. Some similar entries have been turned back because the of the intricate detail in the subject (see my response to Dudger's first try above). The silhouette is also broken by the reflection off the top of the ascending girder. Please try again.
