Check it out!
Went there to see about the a77 L plate and it's there, but they've gone modular with it and some other new ones. They now offer a base plate, a modular L plate and also a plate for the VCG. Also new is NEX plates: base plates and modular L plates for the NEX-5N and the NEX-7 and there's also a L plate that mates to the A-mount adapater.

edit: as far as a L plate for a gripped a77, forget about it. They state in the description for the base plate for the grip that it will be the only one made for it.

I do have the universal Acratech L-plate for my A900 with grip. I use the extended version with a Mestos base plate, but it does add a fair amount of bulk. Sounds like RRS is going the same route.

I wish I hadn't clicked though, because this is darn tempting: NEX LA-EA2 L-plate!

NOW I GET IT! I looked at them again and see what you meant. Interesting design. I wonder how sturdy they are. I kind of liked the one piece L-plate. It always felt very solid and secure.

I have one on order, so will find out how sturdy it is as soon as it arrives.

I'll be getting one also, have to recover from the a77 purchase and Xmas first. I had a feeling the door layout would be a problem and that's why it's designed as it is. The L part can be bolted on in two positions, normally is in-line with the base plate and allows the HDMI door to open (they don't mention the Mic door?), move it forward 10mm and now you can open the remote door and DC door but now you have a 10mm offset from the base in vertical pano panning.
I'm not worried about the stability of it after looking at the pdf Owners Manual.

I think I may have been too tough on Really Right Stuff. See my post further down this thread.

I'm disappointed they aren't doing a one piece L plate for the a77 with vertical grip. These guys do a great job and I count on them for stability and longevity. For me they cost a lot but in return I so appreciate the rigidity and design of their products.

The best reason to choose RRS over Chinese knock offs is their attention to detail. For me, this is not the Really Right approach. I want a single piece L plate I can put on the camera with the battery grip. Like their other L plates I want it to simply work. That's what I'm willing to pay for.

just my .02

It was that or nothing. I just pulled the RRS L plate off the a700 and laid it on the a77 and the doors are too wide, the clamp couldn't open that far to grab a plate that was wide enough to allow for all the doors to open. If they would have designed it like a solid one we couldn't open the remote or DC power ports because they'd be covered.

The plate was designed specifically for that camera and is supposed to be as rigid as the one-piece one.

I think one of the considerations was the fact that they almost didn't make a plate for the A77 at all. When they decided to make one they probably wondered how many they would sell. The A700 and 850/900 were not big sellers. This plate is cheaper to make as it can be cut from bar stock rather than large pieces, with less waste and more profit and lower price.

I will be interested to see if it meets expectations, but I would be surprised if it doesn't work. I have yet to be disappointed by an RRS product.

In retrospect I think that I have been unfair. It is perhaps an unfair assumption of mine to think that RRS can't make a 2 piece L plate as good (or better) than a one piece one. Their web site has quite clear pictures of the upright being in different positions for flexibility.

It is then more reasonable to say, since they know their L plates, that I'd love to see a video review of the two piece plate and it represents a definite innovation for Sony plates.

I look forward to a couple of reviews or word from other Dyxumers.

I don't want to sound too frustrated. I would really like them to do an L plate for the A77 with vertical grip.

I've never seen anything but the highest standards from Really Right Stuff.

The a77 L plates are now shipping, anybody preorder and get theirs yet? Think I'll wait till the end of the month and another paycheck so I can order a flash ring also.

Yes, I received mine. It fits perfectly. There is a reason for the two piece design. The body is too wide, so that if made wide enough for all the doors, it would be too wide for the Arca clamp. Moving it to the other position allows access to the other set of doors.
