This the NEW Intermediate assignment No 5 - Symmetry

Symmetry tends to be associated with harmony and balance, but sometimes the disturbing qualities of near-symmetry can be used to draw the eye.

Assignment: Take a shot where the impact relies upon strong symmetry.

General Assignment Rules

The general rules for the assignments are as follows :

- clean slate, all “old” assignments will be locked (over time as the new ones are created)
- no mining, shots must be specifically taken for the assignment (we trust you )
- only one assignment at the time. Once started you can only take the next assignment after having passed.
- one dimension crop and minor straightening allowed (to allow different aspect ratios, but don’t crop in both directions)
- max 2 pics per post/try
- you can do the assignments in any order, and repeated as many times as you want
- at least one moderators or admin will comment on every post and determine fail/pass. This might include general C&C as well.
- all members of Dyxum can also leave comments on the shots posted
- id of members that passed will be kept in a "pass post"
- specifically good pictures or good examples of assignment passes will be kept in a new "assignment gallery"
- instructions for specific assignments will generally stay as is (and we'll have to write new ones for new assignments).
- shots posted for the assignments are eligible for selection in the weekly exhibitions

Not sure if this is the correct place for questions about this assignment, but might I ask if when you state you want an image with strong symmetry whether you mean a mirror image (as in a wide angle of a stately home) or an image with balance and a sense of harmony? Your help is appreciated, thank you. Ian.

@ ChrBra: I think this is more repitition than symmetry, there's very little symmetry vertical nor horizontal. Also I think the chimney's are leaning left a bit. Pls. try again.

@ Berean: maybe look for some ideas in the old symmetry thread. Especially the entries by AnneM and sydknee are good examples of what we're looking for. So strong symmetry in a balanced and excellent composition. Hope this helps.

@lomitamike: Interesting shot, Mike. Could have been a bit better if the vertical line in the ball had bisected the basket, but it's certainly strong enough for a pass! Cheers... Brian

Interesting shot and well done lomitamike, I would have never thought of something like that. Another idea would be to do a focus stack so also the background is in focus. Just a thought.

Neat shot Gabriel. However I keep tilting my head left as if I want to see it vertical. So I downloaded the picture on my computer and turned it in all directions and found the way you posted is still the best orientation. But I keep tilting my head

@Berean: Your pair of entries are an interesting dichotomy. The first entry shows strong symmetry (for which you get a pass on the assignment) and that symmetry is fundamental to its esthetic appeal. The second shot, while technically symmetric about the vertical axis, derives very little impact from this symmetry. Cheers... Brian

Thanks Brian

I did wonder about this, because (as you write) it's technically symmetrical, but something is lacking. Is the reason this is weak because it's only symmetrical in one plane, and not the horizontal too? Thanks once again. Ian.
