This is the NEW Intermediate assignment No 7 – Texture
Texture in photography links the senses of sight and touch. Subjects need to be well lit and captured in order to evoke the sensations that touching them would bring. Assignment: Take a shot where texture is a strong compositional element

@ wolfgerb: a nice texture and the light and reflection on a wet surface makes it come "alive". For me a pass.
@JST1: I sense some doubt from your caption, and I must say I have the same doubt vs. the assignment. Not that it's a bad picture (it has some nice lines) but I find the pattern of the steps (different assignment ) and bars of the handrail totally overwhelm the texture in the background. Also the texture is quite faint, and almost looks like a flat plane with a spickled paint vs. an articulated surface texture. So pls. try again.Edited by pegelli - 18 January 2010 at 08:20 |

Ok, here's my first attempt at this assignment. I was trying out my new(used) 70-300 sigma DL and saw this and thought of the assignment. No pp on this
.

@comin: are you trying to do texture and pattern all in one shot
I'll give you a pass if you promise not to do that
As general C&C I think the picture is quite flat. The texture part still stands out nicely but could really be enhanced with some directional light from the side. I think something like that will really bring the picture more to life. |

pegelli,
Thanks for the feedback. I figured the texture of the steps and the pavement were stronger than the pattern of the steps. After some consideration I chose the texture assignment. You are correct, the image doesn't really fit either assignment very well. |

Thanks! No it wasn't an attempt at both, just thought it was two good textures together
With regards to light, it was very overcast with the sun behind the building the subject was on

I see what you mean, but for me the grid is more pattern than texture. In my mind the repetitive same shapes are stronger than the bit of rust or paint specs on it. |

I have attempted to show the texture of the broken spring, and of the rust further degrading it.
With this, I have attempted to illustrate the moss/lychin growing on the slats, using DoF to isolate one aspect, that which was strongest.
Thanks, Ian. |

@Berean: I don't know why, but #1 is very difficult to focus on
. My eyes keep wantering to the bright areas. #2 is a pass. The oblique lighting gives the moss more contrast and enhances the texture. Putting the in-focus bar a bit to the right might have made a stronger composition. Cheers... Brian
