cost per unit = 40,000 yen, or 350ish dollars.

wonder how much the CCD in the sony a100 is per unit?

That is the 'sample price'. I would imagine that the cost to camera manufacturers when bought in bulk would be somewhat less.

Nonetheless, this does look very promising!

In volume, much cheaper.

The sensor in the A100 is like 60 bucks IIRC.    Still, this chip will carry a premium price.

Definitely looks like A10 material. But also as pointed out in a Nikon forum, sony tends to announce sensors just before Nikon announces a body with one.   Now I'm not to much believing a D300 will come this week, But a D3H is almost certainly coming. And with 10.4fps, that would do the job. Maybe then later put it in a D300 which would give folks a cheaper smaller body.   Also pentax has an announcement too.

Still, if Sony or the other 2 put this thing in a Semi-Pro body, sell it for 1600 bucks, and it cranks out the 12.5MP with clean iso at 10fps. Canon will make a mess of their pants.   This could be very interesting.

Canon tries to sell their flawed 1DIII for 4500 bucks, and this could trump it for under 2k. Even the 40D will look like a waste if for 200-300 bucks more you can get 2.5MP more and 4 more fps.

This could be A100 syndrome all over. Disruptive body launch.

Sounds like a good sensor to put in a new dSLR if they were planning to announce one sometime soon...

That's an interesting model number to come up with - surely Sony wouldn't go back to a minolta numbering scheme - or do you know something we don't?

Nice catch!

Very interesting specs.

I'm surprised that they didn't use ClearVid Technology for this unit..
I'm very very curious to see how it performs at 1600 iso.
I hope that they will be smart enough to develop an all new AF system to make those 10 (10 !!!) fps really useful in practice...

This is a very smart way to introduce the new camera, imho. The A10 has not been revealed jet, but the Canon 40D is already out dated (on paper of course) :-)

I still would like to have a Canon 5D, but now I'm more confident that Sony will bring something similar/better in the near future.
