Topic: NEX-7 L-Plate?Posted: 05 October 2011 at 16:47 |

After a recent 3-day backpacking trip where I carried too much weight (I'm sure my A900 plus a few lenses, tripod, filters, batteries, etc. was well over 10 pounds) I've been strongly considering a NEX-7 for when I want to travel light(er). I've become very fond of L-Plates though so availability of one for this camera will be a factor in my decision.
I sent Really Right Stuff an email to ask if they were planning to design one and their response was that they have not yet decided. That's pretty much what I expected since the camera isn't even available yet but I'm curious if anyone else would be interested in an L-Plate for the NEX-7. Am I the only one? |

Why do you need an L-plate?
I've considered one for my a580, mostly when using the 70-300G or other heavy lenses. I can't see the need for one on something as light as a NEX-7 though? Or would you be using it with particularly heavy lenses? |

I don't need one but I really like them. The main advantages I can think of are:
1) Much easier to make vertical compositions. Don't have to use the drop notches in the ball head. Don't have to mess around with the legs if you are on uneven ground and hit the bottom of the drop notch before the camera is vertical. 2) Can switch between vertical and horizontal compositions in seconds without any adjustment to ball head or tripod. 3) Weight stays centered over top of tripod, making it much more stable. (I likely wouldn't use this with very heavy lenses so not as much of an issue as it is with my A900, however, I'd probably be using a lighter tripod and ball head too.) Like I said, I don't need one but, having used one for a few years now, I'm spoiled and hate the thought of working without one. |

The advantage of the L-plate is ease of connection to a tripod in either vertical or horizontal mode. It is a very secure connection using the Arca Swiss standard. Large heavy lenses are connected by a lens foot which balances the whole system better and does not stress the lens-body connection as much. I also use mine to fasten to my Blackrapid straps via a QR that remains attached to the strap. Easy on and off both the strap and tripod. |

Have a look at JTEC's Sony NEX-5 & NEX-5N L-Bracket Tripod Mount.
I'm not sure if it will fit the NEX7 but if it doesn't I suppose they'll make one for it when the NEX7 hits the shelves. |

Thanks, I hadn't heard of JTec before. Looking at their site I agree it seems likely they'll make one. I sent them an email to inquire.

Well, now you've got me looking at L-plates ;-)
I discovered that Camdapter do adjustable L-plates but no idea if they'll be small enough for the NEX-7. It might be worth a look. incidentally, they make my favourite hand strap / tripod plate combos. |

Will do. I got an automated email reply saying they are shut down until October 10th (obviously a very small company!) so the answer probably won't come soon.

Okay, here's the reply I got from JTec: "We have a working prototype of an NEX-7 bracket and plan to introduce it with the camera in the US."
I'm very pleased that there will be a custom bracket. If RRS (or anyone else) also decides to make one then it will be interesting to compare the designs and prices. |

If enough people ask RRS to make one they will. I don't like the design of the JTEC plates, they have the dovetail hanging out there in the air for no reason and just taking up space, looks kinda sharp too.

I'd be interested to see how another company would design their plate but I don't think it's fair to say that there is no reason behind the design of JTec's plate for the NEX-5/NEX-5N. It seems obvious to me why their plate looks like this: the dovetail is wider than then camera body so, rather than have a huge plate on a tiny camera, they rotated the dovetails 90° compared to a typical DSLR L-plate. |

Still interested in L plates? The good folks at RRS have blessed you all with both base plates and L plates for the NEX-5N and also the NEX-7. And as a bonus they made a L plate that mates to the LA-EA2 adapter.
