Yes, greek_alpha has got it right. In 1990 Minolta marketed the all white camera, lens and flash set in commemoration of the first Japanese astronaut who spent time in space, on the Russian space station Mir and took this (or a similar camera) along with him. They show up in used stores fairly often and a complete boxed set will still get upwards of $400-$500 if my memory serves me correctly. Here in Japan it is simply called the "Mir".

And here it is in space...
It is traditional... and not to be questioned.

You would think they would have made him put the white lens on for the promo shot.

Here are my "Minolta" items not including the two Minolta 3600 HS(D) Flashes that I have.
My Konica Minolta 28-75 is being used to take the photo. So, obviously it can't be in the photograph.
My Konica Minolta 18-70 also isn't here. It's at my mom's house. DOH!
The camera and lenses are pretty self evident. The after market vertical grip is an Ownuser grip.

All photos taken with my Sony Alpha 700 Camera and Konica Minolta
Maxxum AF 28-75mm F/2.8 (D) Zoom Lens at various focal lengths, F/5.6
and various shutter speeds. ISO speed set at 400. Metering Mode Center
Weighted Average. Two Sony HVL-F56AM set to wireless mode to the left
and right bounced off the ceiling.

That's always a good thing, at least if it means they get to see lots of action!
