Topic: Pop up flash as a triggerPosted: 03 February 2012 at 20:10 |

Hi, I've been following Strobist.com and thier fantastic lighting lessons. I have an A700 and an HVL F42 and at the moment trigger the F42 by flicking up the pop up flash, covering the strobe so no light escapes, and use the infra red component as a trigger for the off camera flash. I can't afford dedicated triggers at present, and wonder if there's anything that could go awry? Your advice and expertise is gratefully received

Can't you see? It all makes perfect sense, expressed in dollars and cents, pounds, shillings and pence: Roger Waters.

1. Block it so it doesn't appear as a reflection in the subject image:
-business card taped just in front but with a large gap- reflects light up and to the sides -some developed, but unexposed E-6 film as a mask will allow the infrared through (from the flash, but not much (or any) of the visible light. 2. In blocking you might compromise the receivers on the strobes - some strategically placed aluminum foil can help "gather" light for the sensor to help trip it. 3. You probably know this, but be sure that pre-flash is off. 4. Cheap radio strobes (Cactus) can be had for about $30 - $40 used. Check your Craigslist. Have fun! |

What you're doing is fine. Just don't overwork the pop-up to the point where it gets too hot. |

I use a bit of fogged film taped over my pop-up so I don't get direct illumination from the camera. It stays in place even when the flash is down, but can be peeled away if required.
Previously I used a small bag made out of a grey lenscloth as a hood to put over the pop-up, but it was too easy to mislay
