I've always had a soft spot for a posterized effect (maybe due to growing up in the 60's?) - anyhow, here is a thread for those who occasionally turn their backs on smooth gradations of tone

I like 3 and 4 best -- must have a play myself.

Elegant new sig, too, Bob.

Hi Bob - great work.

Not sure if these count as posterized - all done using Filter Forge (fantastic software package - check it out) on an old photo I took (Minolta 9 with 100-300APO if anyone's interested) of someone familiar who lives in New York.

You need to read this about posting shots from flickr.

In the case of the second post I just cut off the last few letters and numbers to make them end with .jpg.

Well, within the theme of "effects shots", viewers tend to strongly like or dislike the images. Here's my own experiment, trying to transform a very gaudy local warehouse into some sort of artistic geometric abstraction. I'm not even sure that I like it.

wross - I think "Perpendiculars - Lipton" is really great.

The reason I really like this kind of work is that it really is transformational - you don't need the most expensive camera or the sharpest of sharp lens - but you do need some creative skills and imagination after the event.

I take your point about people having strong views regarding effects shots - especially when so much of photography thinking and discussion these days seems to be centred upon sensor size and MTF charts, when paradoxically it's never been so easy with very basic digital gear, and an old PC running shareware, to produce some really great images.

I agree - that work is a knockout. Like Malone said, you really need to have an artistic vision to transform that. I'm jealous!!!!!!

Malone, geardown: thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you like it. It's not a style that's going to dominate my photography, but it was an educational exercise, and parts of the techniques will probably be used again.

Just for fun I also tried a "posterization". I used a picture of a rhododendron bud, just starting to open. Cropped a bit from the original:

In Photoshop CS3 I used the "Image/Adjustments/Posterize" command with levels set to 3. Subsequently I applied unsharp masking with radius set to about 20, amount = 100% and Threshold = 1.

And having some more fun I transformed a picture of a clivia plant, with flowers, into this:

Perhaps this type of transforming pictures would be a subject for another assignment in the series being worked on now?

pauljg: The first one is a little harsh for my taste, but I think the second one came our very nicely. I tried something similar w/ this one, and ended up with an effect that almost looks like a cartoon. I kind of like it actually.

Hi Walt,

Thanks for your comments. It's the first time I've done this and though I think it is fun to do now and then it will not become my normal way of working with pictures.

Your picture is very good and I especially like the symmetry and the black line delineating the petals. Did you use a special technique?
