Would you buy into this type of modular system?

Not a chance. IMO smaller isn't necessarily better, many of my lenses would be just plain awkward with such a tiny body.

The NEX-7 would be interesting as a small camera in its own right if there were a range of e-mount lenses available that fit that small-camera paradigm. By the time you get to the larger E-mount zoom you have lost much of the advantage of building a smaller camera in the first place.

As my only camera, no way.

I agree with you to a certain extent. But you'll notice the FF Mirrorless camera in the rendering behind the APS-C cams... It is intentionally rendered larger to accommodate your concerns.

I did skim past the less-obvious camera in the background, but now I have to say that larger isn't necessarily better.

So far as I can tell, that body has no grip, so the increased size does nothing for me.

I would, allthough I think the mirror/pentaprism module is a very long shot (but for me also not essential).

I also find it amusing that people can already say what they don't like about and imaginary (speculative) system. I think the best way to evaluate such a sytem is to look for the strength (which in this case for me would be flexibility) while looking for ways to overcome weaknesses.

Who says it doesn't have a grip, or doesn't have in-body SSS. I think it has

Imagine with me if you will, the dream grip of your wildest fantasies crowning that rear rendering. Lets give it replaceable grips that can be custom ordered to fit the hand that holds it. It even has built in remote control that when removed can still operate the camera at a distance. Would that make a difference? Would that allow you to entertain the potential benefits of a modular system that is easily swapped out between E-A- and third party lenses?

Well, it wasn't wholly speculative, there are pictures to look at. I was basing my answer on what was presented.

Proper grip options to help manage larger lenses would help I suppose.

However, since my lenses(not counting those for the Contaflex which cannot adapt to this type camera without extra glass) are all MC/MD, Alpha, or Mamiya and none of the MDs are better than what I have in A-mount, the idea of paying a lot of money for a camera that won't use any of my lenses without paying a lot of money for an adapter (or alternatively, paying a lot of money for much slower lenses in focal lengths that I already have) just doesn't fit with my priorities over the next couple of years. Add that to the fact that there is then no obvious gain over what I use now in terms of handling, I just don't find the proposition compelling.

I can see how this idea might be attractive to someone who DOES have a lot of various lenses they want to adapt, or for other reasons.

My deal with Sony is: SSS inside, SLT outside.

This modular system allows for that. Shall I PS "SSS" on the final rendering to make that more apparent?

The "SLT outside" is accomplished with different modules. You can also get "SLR" too... or just an adapter.

I think that a modular system is a great idea. The whole concept we love about interchangable lenses is choice. Why not expand that choice to more than just the lens.

The problem would likely be the price. If it costs a lot more, I would probably just lug around the full non-modular system all the time.

A bit off topic:

It would be interesting if some camera manufacturer would come up with a camera sensor that would be in a large enough body, but with a system that can move the sensor front or back so that it could be adapted with different lenses that need different distances without having to use glass adapters.

Not sure if there would be enough market for it, but it would be interesting.

If Sony abandons the SLR then we may well be looking at the future with that kludge as a 3'rd party solution.

However it is not going to be that neat. It would be sold to enthusiasts who want to do things the old fashioned way - and you can bet they will want to use the old fashioned lenses with it. So where is the bulge to one side where the focus motor sits?

Yes thank you. It also has a proper wired remote cable port too... and allows tethering and GPS. Might even have a slow/silent wind mode... perhaps even a wind knob that generates enough power for a single shot.

You mean like things used to be with interchangeable finders, prisms, and backs? Why... what's this world coming to? Surely there are no old ideas that are worth anything in this modern world.

You mean like the Contax AX that handled AF by moving the entire film plane along with the prism box? I'm not sure developers are smart enough to do that any more. That tech was lost with the ancient pyramids.

If they did the same thing today, we'd suffer with having added benefits of moveable chip with perspective control, shift function, panning mode, super close focus, and STF focus capabilities on every lens and SSS... Of course this would all be viewable real time with the EVF.

So many drawbacks to that idea... not sure they'd go for it.

I think you've got it... "The KLUDGE"... Great name for a new modular Sony system! I'm in.

Modular is anti-progress when it comes to technology/products.

People don't need kludges and parts slapped together, they just want a single solution that works. Won't be long and we will have Phase Detect on Sensor. Making any reflex heritage pointless.
