Hi, new to the forums. I am very interested in the SLT A55 as a replacement after my A200 got stolen.

I have a strange question that you Alpha users can probably answer I am very close in getting the A55, my brother went on a 3 week trip to Japan, he intends to buy the A55 with 2kit lens but came into a bit of a problem when handling it, the language is in Japanese.

He says their isn't a option to change it to English which I find hard to believe, seeing as some of you guy have the A33 or A55 already, is their an option to change languages? If not can you install any software to convert it? I am hoping since he does not know the language he couldn't navigate to the option.

Also I live in Australia so it will be probably be priced $1600 or more with kit lenses when it comes out, also he intends to use the camera in Japan while on holiday.

Thanks in advance.

see the setup menu section.
there is a language option. BUT it says the offered languages varies by region. And Japanese is not listed in dpreview's list. So make sure you have that in that cam before u buy it.

as with other alpha camera's there are various versions that do not include all the languages you might need.

i have both a a700 and a a900 in the "international asian" version that have english, portuguese and spanish menu's together with what to me seems like arabic, farsi, chinese etc. another a900 i have has nearly all western european languages.

i was told that there may also be a japanese only version.

so, if you want to buy one abroad, you should check with the seller whether the language you want is included.

Ever since the A100 Sony has chosen this absurdly strange path of only putting limited language options in their cameras. And all domestic models don't have a language option at all. The menu item simply isn't there and all menus are in Japanese. My A100 was that way and so is my A700...

So it does discourage people from coming to Japan to buy alpha cameras... of course I don't know why anyone would anyway since they cost more here than in other countries...

I was doing some searching and some say their is a international camera they provide in store but at a extra price with extra languages, around $50 could be true since dpreview link doesn't show a Japan option. hopefully they still provide this option. Will email my brother so he will be prepared.

Thanks all again

My a550, which I purchased from a Hong Kong seller, has English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic and a number of Asian languages to choose from in the menu item language.

ahh lang options available from HK is diff compared to units available in Japanese domestic market. I bought my NEX from HK. came with Eng language. I have checked with seller before buying that.
I work with mobile phones. requirements for Japanese markets are really diff and unique that the company end up having global versions and japanese versions of the same product.
