Went out with the 17-35 on my A850 yesterday, and had lots of fun. Cycled for almost 50km as well while I was at it
.So here's what I count as being at least decent: 1) OOohh reflective ![]() 2) Lifeless ![]() 3) Modernization everywhere ![]() 4) Catching the last sunrays for the day ![]() All C&C is more than welcome. P.S. Tried to correct the distortion on #1 and #3, but only with limited success. Exif is inside if anyone is interested. Cheers! Edited by Guy - 27 February 2012 at 19:16 |

Hello Guy,
So sport and taking picture's is what I like to. 1. Sky is good, maybe what more fill light on the building. 2. It's to dark, fill light helps. Sky is good. But it's to empty, only a strong leading line to nothing. When you have, a subject in the lane, it get's much stronger. 3. Sky's are your strong point, again a little fill light. And the church is not level, on the base. And modern it is, wel spotted. 4. And again, use fill light, to bring out the shadows. And 1/2 stop more exposure, is no problem. When you have Lightroom off course, or something like that. TFS Greetings Willem. |

I agree on #4, a little more fill would make the canal look better and make the reflections pop.
#3 looks to need a little lens distortion correction, plus a smidge of leveling. If #2 was a to show a dreary lifeless lane to nowhere, as the title seems to indicate, then a touch more fill and a slight increase in contrast and it'll be spot on. I like #1. I would try to make the reflections on the buildings face stand out a little more. Bump up the highlights a bit and a tad more contrast and shadows should do the trick. Just my 2 cents worth.

Nice. I hope you weren't cycling while you took these pictures. #3 is my favorite. A very unusual, striking building. There's a bit of distortion you might want to fix. I agree that you also might add some exposure to #4. The water is far too dark.

Hallo Captain Willem!
Thank you for the very good comments. I will try to answer them a bit:
Yes, I liked the sky here a lot, and I will also try with the fill light to see if I like it even better ![]()
Well, it is dark. I wanted it to be dark because of the title, and I already added fill light here. The leading line to nothing is on purpose, I'll make an excuse and say that this is modern art .
I agree, the church could use more fill light. But the church is not level, because I tried a lot of counter distortion and perspective tweaks, but it was impossible to fix completely. (I will show the original when I get home).
Will try here, but then I think that the contrast gets a bit lost, well try try I shall. Thanks for the comments again! They are very very appreciated ![]() P.S.: I use LR 3.2 |

Thank you Dave and ifreedman for you comments as well.
Well, to answer quickly, I already did most of the things you mention, but obviously not enough (the originals are VERY distorted, as this was with 17mm on FF). I also increased highlights to bring out the skies in all 4 pictures. But I suspect that my monitor needs better calibration, because you all say that they are too dark. Will have to check against a calibrated monitor to see for my self. Thanks again! |
