Did anybody see the interesting post on Sony Alpha Rumors? Seems like we will be getting an 18-135 lens after all. Link: Sony 18-135 f3.5-5,6 SAM Lens
A pleasant surprise if you ask me. SSM would have been quite nice to have. However, after trying the 28-75 f2.8 SAM lens I was satisfied that the motor (in that lens) was a pretty good one.

I'm always happy to see new sony A mount lenses even if they aren't specifically what I'm after.

Looks like it could be a decent walk around lens, metal mount is a good sign.

Interesting post, and I concur that it is nice to see new lenses appearing in the a-mount line-up.

Is this lens replacing any existing design (16-105 or maybe even 18-200) or a completely new addition?

Or perhaps its even a competitor to the Sony mount version of Sigma's 18-125mm F3.8-5.6 DC HSM?

Best regards

Gavin

I'm also quite interested - whether the metal mount translates into better quality across the board remains to be seen, but it certainly could be a nice option for a walkaround. The extra 55mm is making me wonder about replacing my 16-80... I looked at the 16-50, but the missing 30mm was a deal breaker

Looks similar to the finish and quality of 16-50SSM.

It may look as an SSM, but that doesn't make it more acceptable that it is a SAM.

I am pretty sure that my 18-55 will be the only SAM lens I ever own, unless they make it easier to switch to manual focus. Not being able to use neither DMF nor the AF/MF button on the camera body is not acceptable in my opinion.

Heh, SAM is louder and slower than my screwdrives. Thus - if it does not have a significant advantage in IQ over my 16-105 than I shan't even consider it.
Of course, 'contrast focus' is the whole point of SAMs according to some. For AF I don't know how that would change my mind though.

If it's less than 400 gr and less than 400 bucks, it would be my next purchase.

look forward to seeing some reviews and sample images , seems like it would be a good walkaround lens.currently use a 16-80 cz , but i like the exrta reach of my minO 28-135 or sigma 28-135mm . see what price this is and maight be getting one.

You know.....I was thinking; being that the focus ring is near the mount end I wonder if that means it has a focus ring clutch like on the 16-80 or the older 24-105. It would be nice if it did. SAM or not, that clutch would be a nod in the right direction for such a lens.

I think it's just a replacement for the 16-105 to give them a non-screw drive lens in that spot.

As was mentioned, even if a lens isn't want your looking for, it's good to see more lenses.

I think it might get packaged with the A37, which won't have a screw drive.

+1 for that!   I also find that 'feature' of SAM to be very very disappointing.       It's a shame because this rumoured lens looks like a useful focal length range and most of these recent lenses have pretty decent optical qualities.   It's just that pesky SAM AF motor!
