You have to provide a file that's unmolested by any other software. Upload it straight from the memory card.

Use Exiftool (+ ExifToolGUI) instead to check for maker note tag "ImageCount" on your NEX-5N

To make sure, I just tried the tool with a NEX-5N image (from Imaging Resource review samples) and it gives this:

Detected Camera model : NEX-5N
Shutter actuations made up to file NEX5NhSLCON4D.jpg: 112
| | | | Sony_Tag9050_0x0032 = 112
| | | | Sony_Tag9050_0x0033 = 0
| | | | Sony_Tag9050_0x0034 = 0
(65536 * 0) + (256 * 0) + 112 = 112

So, as sybersitizen already suggested, somehow you must have done something to your images (Photoshop, Lightroom export, ...):
they are not "straight out of camera" otherwise the shutter count tool would work.

My recently purchased second-hand A77ii:

Detected Camera model : ILCA-77M2
Shutter actuations made up to file DSC00490.JPG: 514
| | | | Sony_Tag9050_0x0032 = 2
| | | | Sony_Tag9050_0x0033 = 2
| | | | Sony_Tag9050_0x0034 = 0
(65536 * 0) + (256 * 2) + 2 = 514

Some of these actuations are mine as I've tested it today. The body and the other contents of the box all look quite minty, so this count is quite credible.

A comment on exif. You can restore exif content in a file with exiftool, If you have the original left. And you can re-scale an image with both convert from ImageMagick (linux) or Irfanview (windows), they preserve exif info.res

this command copies exif tags from original.arw to photoshopped.jpg
exiftool -tagsfromfile original.arw photoshopped.jpg

As an alternative work around, Picture Information Extractor (free) can read shutter count (under the EXIF tab on the far right, look for the "Sony" group and shutter count or image count depending on which camera model).
C & C always welcome

Looks like it's gone, but this one lists a33, a35 and a55 as successfully tested models.

For the A77II I use Phil Harvey's Exiftool.

Just put this in the command line: exiftool -ImageCount <path to file>
I think it will also work for other Sony cameras as wel.
