    Posted: 28 December 2011 at 01:37
I ask in advance, please take it easy on me for what I am about to say . I am thinking of switching to Canon because I'm just not pleased with:
1. Sharpness of action pics (Let me know if the 70-200(G) is that much better than the 80-200 (black))
2. Selection of 70-200mm 2.8 lens (non sealed)
3. Noisy iso above 800 (I don't like PP and tricks, I try to get it right in the camera)
4. Price and availability of good glass

Most of these issues are magnified indoors under low light. It just seems that most event and sport shooter are Canon guys. Don't get me wrong I love the quality of my still shots and some of my sports stuff; mainly horse racing but when I compare some of my shots with canon guys mine always seem to come up short especially in sharpness. I want to stay with Sony/Minolta but I'm finding myself leaning more towards switching. Please give me some hope.

In closing, I think I have good equipment and can take a good picture. I really could use some good advice before I fork out any more money or make a move.

Thanks in advance

what canon cameras are these guys shooting with number one, number 2, check the noise out on a print, i was really supprised at a photo i took at a drag strip with my a850 and sony 70-300g at iso 1600 when i printed it out at 13x19, the noise was not noticeable.
spend some time looking at the canon camera you are looking at buying, and see if it is really a point of the camera being better or if there is something else that is making a difference in your photos.

Well, you appear to be using an SLT, have you tried a Sony 550, 560 or 580? SLT's do not seem to perform as well in low light high ISO situations.

I am not going to try and talk you out of or into a decision but if your only experience with Sony has been the a55 I don't feel you should throw a blanket over the entire system based on just that body, which is the only one listed in your signature.

As far as good glass goes Tamrom makes some pretty good lenses at a reasonable price for all major cameras including Sony. And be aware that with Canon if you want IS you have to buy it in the lens at a premium. Every lens has IS with Sony.

Most shooters of everything are Canon guys. It takes a different sort to be a happy Sony user, and it seems to me that once somebody starts 'thinking' of switching, it's only a matter of time before he ends up doing exactly that. You have to go with what feels good to you.

Jdkeck,
Thanks for the input. The canon cameras that are being used are older 1d mark ii and iii, 70-200mm IS 2.8.   Spec wise I think my A55 more than holds its ground. Ive taken a few pics with a canon setup and was really pleased with sharpness; but colorwise sony/minolta wins hands down. I will say when ever I use my 50mm 1.4, I am very pleased all the way around except I have to be on top the subject. Am I asking too much from my equipment or not enough from myself.

Most of experience is with the a55, never really looked into other cams. Which one would you suggest?

Thx

I'm using both system, Sony and Canon, but I only has Sony stuffs (use Canon occasionally - but quite often - since mostly my friends are Canon shooter). I'm not find I miss anything with Sony (except video and FF for now :p). Sharpness wise, I had CZ 1680 as my walk-around lens, and the sharpness is sufficient.
Never use 70200 f2.8 on Sony before, but use it at Canon (I only use non IS version before). Not bad lens, good result, but not for me since it's too heavy, especially when I use 5D mark2 or 7D (that's why I prefer 70200 f4 L).
Good luck for your move

You should go with the system that makes you happy. If you're not able to get good pictures with the A55, then perhaps a different camera would be better for you. The 80-200 f2.8 is a slower focusing screw drive lens compared to the white 80-200 or the 70-200mm SSM. And there is a reason that micro focus adjust is a useful thing to have. When you say your action pictures are unsharp, is it because the image is out of focus or is the shutter speed not fast enough to stop the action? Go set the ISO to 3200 (if indoors) and a higher shutter speed (and do some post processing). If you really want good high ISO performance, consider Nikon. In the end, though, it's only a camera (and a bunch of lenses).

Properly exposed images at ISO 1600 with the A55 is not really that noisy. It's your call. I'll also say that post processing is something that can greatly enhance not only your images but your enjoyment of photography.

The Canon bodies you're talking about have 1.3X 8 and 10 MP sensors, respectively. You're naturally going to see lees noise with these than Sony's 1.5 APSC 16 mp sensor at comparable ISOs. The SLT mirror probably makes it a bit worse, too, but you should get better resolution with the Sony. I've seen what the A580 can do and I think it would solve a lot of your problems with noise.
As far as AF speed and tracking, I doubt you're going to match those Canon bodies with a Sony. They were professional state of the art bodies designed specifically for this type of photography when they were introduced. Maybe the A77 can come close, but you're back to a problem with noise at higher ISO.

Whatever you decide good luck. But you might want to price the canon or nikon lenses and check availability (especially nikon) before you make any plans.
