Leicester Tigers (the best English Rugby Union team) v Gloucester in yesterdays Premiership contest.
I have never done much 'action' photography but if I cannot get something 'half decent' with the A700 and the 70-200 ssm then perhaps I better give up. You be the judge ? Difficult conditions, under floodlights and crushed into my seat and hardly able to lift my elbows (get my excuses in early) Sadly the 'Tigers' lost 17 - 30 to a very good Gloucester team. In the teams defence we had 10 first team squad players missing, most away at the World cup (5 players with the England team plus players with other national teams). 1, 3 and 4 at iso2500, 2, 5 and 6 at iso3200. All run thru Noiseware Photoshop plugin at default settings. Leicester Tigers in green. Lineout

Excellent shots and really sharp.
Amazing high iso shots. Cool !!! Some of the shots, the faces look a tad green; may be from the reflection of the field... or my monitor... |

These look great. What kind of success rate did you get with the focusing? My a100 is great when it hits but I get too many OOF for serious action photography. A good hit rate (with an old Sigma 70-210 2.8) would be enough to get me to buy the a700.

Great shots! Good to see another rugby fan out there. Curious about the focus speed with the a700 and SSM. And how was AF continuous? The shots are all excellent - you should apply for a press pass next season!

They look great. I haven't had much of a chance to use my 70-200 SSM with the A700 yet but at least now I know its a good combo. On another note I am really going to have to watch a rugby game some time. All the shots I've seen lately look so intense and hardly any padding or helmets make me think those players are some tough dudes.

Roy,
Fantastic images. If you'd told me that you have been shooting sports for years and these were taken at ISO800, I would have believed you. I'd love to know what your workflow was for these images - RAW? Converted with what? How much noise reduction/sharpening? This is perhaps the best set of action shots I've seen with the a700 and they do not seem to suffer at all from being ISO2500/3200. |

Roy, great series of shots. The 70-200 / a700 combo is obviously working well for you!
How does it feel, knowing you can work at ISO 3200? These would be impossible with the a100. I am very impressed. I had told myself the a700 was not needed just yet - thanks 
It is really good to see positive stuff about a700 here. For me there have been too much negative stuff posted here, this week. I am just thankful the 'A' mount even exists, nevermind that it can produce results like this. Thanks for posting. now...DigitalRev you say...

Very good action shots. And high-ISO is fantastic. The only problem I have is somewhat strange skin-tones (but not on all photos). Is it because of lighting?
