Dyxum Photography Challenges

One Prime Challenge

The theme is "One month - One prime" here and the only guiding principle is that you will nominate one of your prime lenses and use it for an entire month. The idea is to challenge yourself and expand your knowledge and ability to take photos that you wouldn't have otherwise taken with that specific lens. Respectively, is supposed to make you think, depending on the level of challenge you're looking for and the events that you need to go to, how something can be done with your particular chosen lens instead of using for example a zoom. The idea is also to have fun and not to prevent anyone from taking any photos.

Pic-A-Day Challenge

For some people the commitment of a whole month of shots using only one lens is daunting, therefore the "Pic-A-Day" weeks were started. And unlike "One month - One prime" and "Week 50" you don't have to restrict yourself to one specific lens, the basic challenge is to take a shot each day and post it in one of the weekly threads available. However if you do like, you can set yourself extra restrictions - it's up to you. Normally "Pic-A-Day" weeks are run in the month following the "One Prime Challenge".

Have a look at the history in the Challenges subforum.

Past:

* Week 50 is a mini one prime challenge that just runs in cw50 and only 50mm primes are allowed.

Special Events

"The day prime"
Inspired by Week 50 this special challenge has the idea to take pictures with a particular prime lens on the appropriate day, e.g. 20mm used on 20 January 2011.

"CYC -- Challenge Your Creativity"
A one week long challenge where each participant selects his preferred subject at the beginning, takes a shot of the same thing each day and all week long - no change of subject later on allowed - and posts his results in the daily CYC threads. Other restrictions are also possible e.g. "no crop", "B&W", "one prime", whatever.

"Music Month" | "Pic-a-Song Challenge"
A chance to be creative with images inspired by song titles and lyrics. Paint a picture and tell a story with your image that somehow ties in with the title.

"End of Days"
December 21, 2012 is the end date of the Mayan calendar, there are apocalyptic interpretations of this event and some consider that 2012 marks the End of Days.
Challenges are usually about gear but this one is to use your imagination and produce interesting, beautiful, emotional, funny, weird, ... photos that symbolize the End of Days. There are no restrictions on the lens and processing to be used.

"Chasing the sun"
A special event where the idea is to chase the sun across the globe on a certain day of the week. All participating members take a picture of the sunset at their local spot and post the result with time and latitude/longitude.

"Dyxum anniversary - 19 July"
On 19 July 2005 Dyxum forum was officially launched and the birth of our community. To celebrate the 5th anniversary a special event, called "Our Day" was run and all members were invited to post - with time + time-zone and location - a single picture taken during the course of that special day and show their part of world in a dedicated thread.

"One Third Keepers" Film Challenge
Take your Alpha-mount film body, any lenses you like, any kind of film and shoot, develop, select one-third of keepers and post them before the deadline. (If you don't have a Minolta body, forget about this rule and use any other sexy old film camera.)

"Minolta XD Film Challenge"
Shoot one roll of film of any type with your film body camera of the XD, XD5, XD7, XD11 series and post at least one-third of keepers before the deadline. Try to keep lenses Minolta Rokkor of any focal length. Of course it is assumed that all participants shoot with A-mount cameras (film and/or digital) as well. This is prerequisite to qualify for the challenge.

Not that I have any primes, but how about a 'One Wide Week'? Using only a prime that is 28mm or LESS for an entire week. It could be extended for a month, but I couldn't come up with any good titles.

I don't know if this has been done yet. How about a "one zoom" challange. Limit it to Minolta zooms only and nothing faster than F-4.
This will give the people that don't have or can't afford the F2.8 hi speed zooms a fighting chance.

It has been suggested in various guises - most commonly as a kit lens challenge, but relatively little enthusiasm from the floor... However if there is sufficient demand...

OK, how about this for a challange.

It can be called "Shoot The Week", run it for seven days, start on Monday and shoot anything you want that starts with the letter M, on Tuesday anything that starts with TU, Wednesday the letter W, Thursday TH, Friday F, Saturday SA, & Sunday SU. Use any lens you want, and PP is allowed.

Interesting idea, but how to accomodate nations where the names of the days of the week are different? :-)

Hi Bob,
Maybe let them use the first letter of each day according to how it is spelled in thier language. Just put in rules that it is according to how each day is spelled in thier countries language, if more than one day starts with the same letter than the first two letters will be used.
This is a pretty easy going group, I don't think there would be any problems.

I like TOM's idea! Here's a 'second' for it!

I started a forum thread for 'busy photographer/parents' and have had lots of responses here.

As an alternative to the usual parent-as-paparazzi at the soccer game, I'd like to set up some challenges specifically for Busy photographer/parents that are unusual. People seem to like the idea to spur some creativity in the lives of busy, sleep-deprived parents. We don't have to be off on a mountainside to take good shots. There must be lots of opportunities under our noses even during short interludes of peace and quite around the house or yard if prompted and given some structure...

Challenge #1 idea:
"My kids' toys kids' point of view".
-- a kind of get on your belly and try to capture your child's eye view of their toys
-- no kids allowed in the shot

Challenge #2 idea:
"While my kid(s) are sleeping"
-- no kids are allowed in the shot
-- let's keep it PG-13 or under

Snapped.
