Why not just use the 2 second timer mirror lock up on a tripod? And maybe a fixed studio type scene rather than a bathroom with a fan box? Well there is no MLU on the 350 but...

Because it doesn't lock it up. It stops camera movement from pressing the button only. You can still see through the viewfinder so the mirror flips up at the last moment just like a normal shot. Its a dumb design.

Epilogue.
I want to personally thank BMS above for the appropriate action he took against those that clearly broke policy....even including myself at a few junctures I suppose. And nothing I said here was ever personal - for the record.

Wrapping up....literally.
Even as I get ready to drive down to the post office; I feel so much better now that I've boxed and labeled the A580 to be sent back this evening...insured....out of my purview. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh. That's better. Problem solved. The A350 is still on a slow truck back to me at this point.

Conclusion:
Weither the the problem was due to dud cameras, mirror slap, backfocus, ISO, or Lucifer himself: it wasn't the camera for me. I mean, why should I spend time correcting those issues when I can just shoot BETTER photos with my old camera....makes no sense.

Thanks again
Many thanks to those who were constructive, I even sort of appreciate those that got out of line - heck, we're all on the same side and CLEARLY love this platform and it's lenses!

PS. If you drive by some crazy guy hanging backwards off a high rock trying to get a perfect shot of a sunset & subject at his own peril - honk your horn - it's probably ME!

Here is a demo showing the vibration. The first is on a tripod with the hand on the camera hitting the shutter button. The second is remote (same purpose as 2 sec timer). The third is remote plus MLU. As you can see, getting the hand off the camera is waaaaay more important than MLU. MLU is a 'Sign of a Real Photographer' rather than a necessary feature for most of us. - Terry

Just want to wrap this up with a GOOD comment about the new a65.

I bought an a65 and tested it today against the same a350 that beat the a580 last year.

Well...the a65 is better. I would say a lot better. Of course all I care about is IQ but - wow - the interface and screen are a knockout - this a65 is REALLY a great GREAT camera.

Here is a link to test photos:

You are safe to buy and sell your old Sony...this is a camera to be very proud of which will take much better photos than your old one!

The "563" photo is the one from the a65...the other is the a350.

They both look mushy at least at that resolution and JPEG compression. A350's colors seem less grayish though.

I could not get any of my Minolta lenses to auto-focus sharp on my new a560 and the Noise reduction was overpowering. I had to send it back.
I highly suspect sony is moving away from old Minolta glass support.
