I'm not 100% sure what my first A-mount camera was, but that is because I have bought many job lots on ebay to get a few bits that I want and then sell the remainder so the bits I wanted were free

The first A-mount camera that I owned to use was a 500si. I bought it shortly after selling off all of my canon digital gear, because I had sold the lenses I didn't see much point in keeping the film bodies. After the sales went through I bought the 500si as a cheap film camera, since then it has grown into an upgraded film body, an old Sony Alpha and a nice range of lenses.

Photography gear has a strange habit of doing that

How about a "Your First E-mount Camera" survey? I was a hesitant NEX-3 purchasers back in 2010-ish ... my NEX-6 is generally my "go to" camera nowadays, A77ii when I shoot sports. I'd like to test drive an A6500 to see how well that does with sports.

Dynax 7. A great camera. Then upgraded to the D9, easily the best film camera I ever handled.

My first A mount was a Maxxum 5000, 50mm F1.7., 1800 flash. Next purchase was a 35-70 F4 and last a 28 - 135 F4/ 4.5. I still had all of these and was so excited when I heard Sony bought Minolta and the new A100 would work with my lenses.

TOM A350, A580, 550si, a complete set of Maxxum crossed x len's (minus the 300mm), Tam 17-50 2.8, 70-200 2.8. 70-300 5-6.3 USD, 90 2.8 macro
Photographs are memories we can see and share.

It started with a SrT 303 in 1974. Since, XD7, X700 and a 9000 (~1985). Then digital, KM 7D (Still have it- had it converted it to IR.) (My first digital a Minolta HI 7 - not a SLR.)
Sony A850, then A99 and now A99II.
Have difficulties to ditch any camera - but 3 full formats I realise might be somewhat too extreme for an amateur!???

Here is a very new photographer's reason! I purchased the Sony a77 m2 as my first camera that is not point and shoot. I used my mom's Maxxum 7000 a bit back in the eighties. My mother was a professional photographer and had extra lenses. I want to go pro eventually but wanted to get my entry-level gear at the best buck for the bang. I sort of regret not going ff, but the Sony is a great camera. If I have not had the Minolta lenses offered to me, I likely would have gone with another brand because I underestimated Sony.

@retta ... I think many of us are with Sony because of legacy Minolta gear. Good luck!

I'd love to have full-frame too (not 100% sure why, LOL). For me, I'm on a path to all mirrorless one day. Mount proliferation is an issue (A-, A-crop, FE-, E-), but the world marches on.

The Minolta 7000i, I think around 1990. I also later used the original Minolta 7000 and 9000. Although I sold the lenses I had for these cameras during the second half of the 1990s, trading them for other equipment, I have been re-purchasing the same ones over the last few years. It is great to reconnect with them!

I've been lurking for a few years... I started at the age of 15 with a Ziess 'Contessa' given to me by the owner after he said to me 'son if you can get that film out right now, I'll give you the camera' I did, and he did. That was stolen later. I got married and bought a Petrie. For many years had point n shoot, took a Konica Minolta DiMage Z3 (a blazing 4.1MP) to New Zealand for 2 months, left it on the beach overnight.Yup..still there in the morning! Later on bought an A330,sold it and moved to an A65. It too was sold recently when I got my A77, I just bought an A7 which I am using exclusively older 'Rokkor' glass on it. I'm loving the old glass. I picked up a f1.9 55mm made in 1971 ($30 cad), and this lens has astonished me! I am having so much fun..thinking of selling A77

I have used Minolta since 1970 something (SRT101) and updated every 2-3 years about since then, don't remember when I bought my first A-mount though, but I guess it was quite early when it first made it to the market.
