positive:Small, light

comment:Bought for ff film, paid high street retail and regretted it ever since 97. Only decent wide prime for ff at the time. Otherwise a decent lens, small and performs well enough. Not great at 2.8, Better on ff. Could be used as a prime on APS. Still demands around 200$ which is too much. OK at 100$. Get a modern zoom, say 20-35 mm or a more modern wider still would be better. 24mm is just not a very useful focal length for me.

positive:Small
Light
Good minolta coating.
Great short focussing distance
Doesn't extend during focus
Front doesn't rotates during focus
Good build quality
negative:Short turn on the focus ring might hurt video performance. Then again video wasn't known in that time.
Only F2.8
Bokeh can be a bit harsh
comment:This lens is quite a performer. Of course made in the film era it might not have a few things. But it does has the Minolta Coating so nice contrast of images with that nice feel over it.

Its light, its small yet it is 24mm something that was pretty uncommon in that time.

Even on 24mpixel it still shows it can deliver the images. With those rich tones and contrast. If you want sharper shoot a modern lens ;) This lens is about character.

Compared to my tammy 17-50mm this one has more contrast, looks well you know minolta color. The Tammy is sharper at the images. What else to expect from modern coatings and a modern lens.

But lets be fair that is pixel peeping, when looking at the images, printing them out and hanging them on your wall they look lovely. And that is all that should matter in the end.

Distortion is very acceptable. Within reason shall we say, it is easy in lightroom to adjust for it. And you don't end up throwing away to many pixels because of distortion adjusting.

Even not adjusted images look good to. I still suggest to adjust them a little bit.
In the end a great little performer that might just beat the tammy 17-50mm at 24mm.

positive:Well built, small
negative:Flare sensitive (like most WA lenses). Lens cap hard to remove with hood on. Bokeh is not the best. Soft wide open.
comment:The spitting image of the M50F1.7RS. It has a similar (but not identical!) lens hood and 55 mm filter thread with the M35F2 and has similar appearance. I have used the 16-50 a lot at 16 mm on my A700, so I bought the 24 in anticipation for the upcoming A99 and to go back to my old ways of shooting primes. The lens is well built and compact. The lens focusses very fast with no hunting. MFD is next to nothing (20 cm or so). Corner sharpness wide open is barely adequate and stopping down to F5.6-8 is required for best results. Have not noticed any distortion worth mentioning. Works really well on FF A99, but needs stopping down for best results. Bokeh is a bit busy.

A true gem and well worth the investment.

comment:I got this one to replace my 24-50 f4 and it served me a btter result, I won't be bothered to use a prime instead of a zoom so I think it's my right choice

At f2.8 it's still not sharp as my 100-200 at f4.5 but only stepped to f3.2 could help, and still, not as sharp as 50 at f2.8 anyway

A very fun length for APS-C, better than 28 f2.8

Recommended to stay in your camera bag

negative:-less corner sharpness and contrast f2.8
comment:I wanted a prime in the 24mm range. The Sigma is huge, so I did not carry it a lot and sold it. This little lens fits in any pocket and looks cute on the A55. Compared with my CZ 1680 it has a better corner sharpness and more neutral colors in my opinion. The CZ is a little on the red site. Center sharpness is very good on the CZ already, so the prime doesn´t add a lot to this. At f2.8 there is a less contrast and corner sharpness, but at f4 it is excellent. The CZ should be stopped down to f5.6 @ 24mm for better corner sharpness, but the minolta at f4 is still better in this respect. Distortion seems well controlled and I did not experience any flare, yet.

comment:Just a nice lens. It's too close to the 35mm for me to use it a lot, but every time I do, it's like an old friend is rediscovered. I used it more on the a700 than on the a900, probably because it's essentially a 35mm on the APSC. Very little distortion indeed, and an easy lens to use. For whatever reason, I found it very useful indoors.

positive:- Sharp

negative:- Nothing
comment:The lens is light and discreet. The rubber focus-ring is smooth and comfortable, it does not feel as "loose" as some plastic ones. The lens gets very sharp from f4/5 and the AF is accurate and fast even in poorer light.

It is a really good wide-angle prime considering its price. Knowing that from 20mm and wider all lenses get significantly more expensive, this lens is the great deal for those who cannot/want to spend too much on a new lens.

This is my first prime lens and I am very pleased with it, my kit lens will never come close to the a100 again.

comment:After using this lens (and my just aquired Minolta 50mm macro) I DO NOT WANT TO GO BACK TO A WALK AROUND ZOOM. Its a stunning lens that simply produces lovely sharp images with great colour and great image contrast. There is no CA that I can find and what little softeness there is in the corners wide open will sharpen by F4. I use this on an A700. Great all round lens of an APS-C sensor. Will keep this lens for ever.

comment:Bought this lens from new old stock. The lens itself is built well and does not appear to be made cheaply but I do have a love hate relationship with this lens. I can get some beautiful pictures at times and on other occurances I struggle with the sharpness of this lens. It does produce CA's in high contrast areas and stopping down does help but does not eliminate them. It's light weight and focuses fast. I use it as my light weight travel set-up.

positive:Quite good stopped down to f5.6/8, almost into the extreme corners (but not quite)

Decently built

Smallish and light

Fast and accurate AF

Distortion is linearly barrel and therefore easily corrected
negative:Flare control is not great

Suffers from chromatic aberrations
comment:Positively surprised by how sharp it is almost into the extreme corners, but disappointed by relatively pronounced colour fringing. Flare is also a problem.

Barrel distortion is pronounced, but linear and easily put right

I'd like to see a direct comparison with both CZ 16-35mm ZA and CZ 24-70mm ZA @ 24mm, because I have the impression that it will match both except for flare and CA control

(7/5/09) Having used it for a few days longer now, I must confess that I'm terribly disappointed by the huge amounts of colour fringing, even when stopped down to f8, in normal situations such as architecture against a cloudy sky, and which I'm having trouble correcting in post

I've now replaced this with an adapted Leica Elmarit 28mm (latest type); although not exactly the same focal length, the Leica is light-years ahead: much less distortion, sharper across the frame, virtually no CAs and flare in situations where the Minolta was all-over-the-place, much better build, although it only works in manual with stop-down operation...

negative:a little too much plastic for my liking
comment:Firstly, this lens is blazing fast at focusing! The focus ring has a very short travel and it is shockingly fast on all cameras tested (maxxum 5, a100, a700).

Sharpness is quite good wide open, and very useable. from f4 to f8 is VERY sharp. Bokeh (out of focus rendition) is very good and aided a LOT by the circular aperture.

Build quality: not the best, it's a little too plastic.

Colour is nothing exciting, and I have not seen any flare, I get the feeling I won't be seeing any either...

I love this focal length on film and on digital bodies... Makes a very nice wide-angle on full frame, and a great walk-around on digital.

I would recommend, if not encourage people to buy this lens if they don't have it! I got very lucky and found a good RS (latest model) with hood and case!

comment:A joint/comparison review of the 24 MinO and MinRS.

Tiny, I think Minolta's smallest AF prime. Great for going light. Delivers the image with bags of punch. Highly recommeneded.

Af performance is good, distortion and colors great. sharpness could be better.

Pricewise the MinO is the better value of the two. The MinRS is harder to find and is certainly a better handling lens if you like manual focus.

Shouldn't be compared with the Sig 24/1.8 EX DG ... size and aperture means you are looking at different needs (Min for going small, Sig for going fast)

comment:Great lens, its the one most often on my 7D. Its really quite sharp, but on some subjects I do notice better performance from the 50 and 90mm lenses. Thats not surprising though, considering the comparison.

I often prefer this focal length to the wider 17mm, as it imparts less "wide angle look". When I used the kit lens that concept escaped me, I often cranked it all the way to 18mm without considering the "look" I was after.

positive:Good Sharpness
Compact Size
Relatively wide on 5D
55mm filter thread
Good color
Fast AF
negative:Wish it had bigger aparture
Not as wide as one could've hoped for landscape
comment:A relatively affordable wide angle-ish prime for 5D(wide enough for film). Much cheaper than the 20 f2.8 and much sharper than the kit lens. Common filter size allows me to share accessories with my other lens. The field of view is perfect for car show on 5D. Recommanded.

Addendum:
The recommandation stands especially considering the price, but 20 f2.8 is more useful for landscape and scenic shot especially if space is at a premium(ie tighter alleyway...etc).

comment:If you have a 50mm 1.7 you will forever be mixing the 2 up. I have to keep checking the labels. I find myself forgetting it's only a 2.8, which just seams so slow for a prime. But it's faster than most zooms in that range.

Its build is solid, if you have a 50mm 1.7 (you do have a 50mm 1.7 don't you?) then it will be very familiar, they are virtual clones. A minor difference is the bigger filter, 55 vs 49, which is nice , also the dumb hood of the 50mm 1.7 is gone and it has a common bayonet job. It only comes up short on build rating because of the small focus ring.

The lens performs well in the dark as one would expect. In bright sun it can be a little bit rough, Flare is a issue, even removing any filters I had on the front I would still get glare in bright sun. You can use the hood from the 2.8/100, 100-300, or 75-300 to get a better hood for APS, it will vignette a little in the corners, cutting the hood some one get things just right. Don't expect good bokeh from this lens, it's pretty bad in that department, but overall the lens does well.

Like the 50mm, it really needs a bigger focusing ring. And definitely should be faster, its only a 2.8, so it doesn't get that much faster then some zooms. But if you can find one for a good price (under 200 bucks) its a good lens to get. If only it was at least a 2.0 it could be a really great lens. As is, it's more of a strangely expensive lens. Today, it's not that wide, but for it's wideness and speed it's not a bad trade off, and it's still small.
