positive:Very good close-up lens
short MFD in macro
small and compact
negative:field curvature
comment:Minolta made so many slightly different zooms of roughly this focal length range it is sometimes difficult to distinguish them or to find any reason to bother. But they do have their distinctive features.
Unlike the 28-85 (my copy of which was very poor) this one has the macro switch at the long end and is much more useful. Indeed the macro range is very sharp, like the 35-70mm f4.
For those not very familiar with it, the macro 'switch' disconnects AF but also moves some of the glass elements to focus closer. You can move the switch as a rough focus control and still fine-tune the focus with the front ring. You can modify the lens to keep AF in macro (there's a guide to that somewhere on Dyxum), but I usually focus in close-ups by moving my body a bit so I don't find the MF bit a problem - indeed, it's quite convenient to turn off AF with the macro switch.
The later silver-coloured 28-80/28-100mm lenses have a shorter MFD than most of the earlier ones, but can't quite match the macro region of this lens.
Outside the macro region the lens seems much of a muchness with the others, and not especially valuable on APS-C so it's the useful FF close-up capability that will probably make it interesting. I hope to do some proper testing on it soon.

comment:This is my second copy of this lens and I believe it performs as well as most of the non original minoltas out there. The colous and sharpness are definatly as good as the 35 -70 f3.5-4.5 & 35-105N.

comment:I got it as wedding gift with the Minolta Clasic 600i back int the 1990:th.
The sharpness is OK for film. It is sub-standard for Digital photography. The focus distance is bent, it is clearly closer focus in the sides than in the center. I thought it was soft in the sides, but after closer look it is only heavily bent focus area. Softer than the Sony kit and Minolta F4 35-70. I dont use it anymore since getting the 35-70, since 35-70 is sharper, more colors and contrast, better in all way. And the Sony kit lens covers the wide focal length.

comment:Very sharp stopped down, usable wide open. Between 50 and 80 sharper than 28-85 above f7.1.

Good macro.

For the price a good walkround lens but obviously with restricted range. Obviously from the reviews below there are a fair number of poor samples of this lens, but there are also some very good ones. You won't find anything better for the price..

Acceptably sharp wide open and good sharpness stopped down by 1 stop
Arguably the best colour rendition of all my minolta lenses.

Build isn;t bad considering the weight of the lens.

Way better than the kit lens between 50 -70.

A good reliable and solid lens.
If you need one 28-80 lenss, this one has the best build quality.
Macro mode is only manual but it gives sharp pictures.
This lens at a low price is good quality when compared with alpha kit lens.
I think that it is not so bad .
Recommendable, not that bad at all .

comment:Got to use this lens for a few weeks when I was looking for something to replace my Sony kit 18-55, at first I aimed at Minolta 28-85 but got this instead for a very cheaper price.

I like how it's built and its look, it gave me a nice result. Sharp when stepped down a little. Long enough length for walk-around lens but the hood is kinda useless

I rellay love this lens but I intended to get 28-105 instead so I didn't need to keep it.

comment:A good reliable and solid lens. Bought originally with my Minolta 700si film camera as a standard lens I have very few complaints with this lens. It has won me many competitions and the Macro facilty (manual focus) is great. Other reviews are less flattering and it makes me wonder if build quality dropped off over time.....mine is pretty old.
Given that it was bought for a film camera the 28mm starting point was OK. On a digital this equates to 42mm which makes it less versatile than the stunning 16-80mm Zeiss lens. Second hand it would be a worthy purchase.
On the a900 results were not quite as good as on the a700. So now sold alongside the 700si. Sharpness has been reduced from 4.5 to 4 as a result.

comment:I've got it free with Dynax 7xi body, so tried to test it on A200. I think that it is not so bad and at least on film or 6MP body still useable. Coating and resolution is not up to date. From the other hand, it still deliver great colors and if you don't print really big pictures resolution is enough. Macro mode is only manual, but gives sharper pictures.

comment:This lens has the best build quality out of the three 28-80mm lenses I tested. It requires you to lose AF functionality and push a 'macro' button to focus closely. There is a great loss of fine details compared to the primes. There is also a significant colour cast in the images I tested. I would stay away.

See the lens tests on pbase while they're up:

http://www.pbase.com/dbradley/7d_lens_tests

If you have to have one of these 28-80 lenses, this has the best build quality. The optics on the 3.5-5.6 II are a bit better, but the build is a LOT worse.
