comment:This lens is amazing. The top of the bill!
the speed and accuracy of the Af is just perfect. even with the tc attached, it focusses effortlessly.

The most interesting thing is the pre-focus setting. When shooting birds, you can pre-focus on the brach where the bird usually sits. you can then go on shooting. when the bird shows up, you just have to press one button and the focus is right where you want it!

The weight is an issue thoug. This one made my shoulders ache, because you also need a strong tripod-setum for this one. You don't want this lens falling over.

the lens hood system is better than that of the 400mm f4.5. It detaches quickly.

Compared to the sigma 500mm f4,5 apo ex dg, the minolta focusses quicker, but the sigma is holding up pretty well against it.

The advantage of the sigma is the relatively cheap drop-in CPL filter.
The minolta one is extremely rare and expensive.

positive:Very sharp.
Full time direct manual focus in all AF modes (better than standard DMF).
Prefocus button.
Flexible focus limiter.
Min focus limit is 2 meters only (less need for extension tubes).
Robust tripod collar with two screw holes (nice with quick release plates).
Internal filters.
Robust build quality.
Internal focusing.
Works well with matched 1.4x and 2x tele converters.
Fast and silent auto focus.
negative:None.
comment:The lens comes in a large metal hard case, with a lock and key. Included is a strap, a carbon fiber hood, a clear internal filter, and a leather front lens cap (plus the standard rear plastic cap).

The lens is fairly heavy to handle, and a tripod is recommended, but it is possible to hand hold without too much struggle.

The image quality is excellent, with a very smooth bokeh.

The auto focus is very precise, quiet (more quiet than the 70-200 f/2.8 SSM), and fast (but not quite as fast as the 70-200 f/2.8 SSM).

The KM APO tele converters work really well with this lens, with no noticeable image degradation.

To sum up: Simply one of the best 300 mm lenses there is.
