compared to:Any other rectilinear super wide angle lens...excellent choice.
price paid:$312.00 new
positive:Compact and light, well built, smooth helicoid, positive aperture stops, well controlled flare and CA/CL. Metal mount and tight tolerances are appreciated for a prosumer lens.

negative:No EXIF data - aggravating. Lightweight, plastic build - not an issue for me.
comment:Another strong APS-C optic from Samyang at an affordable price. IQ is above average for a rectilinear super wide. Shoot at f5.6 or f8 - the other f-stops are not worth using. Wide open is usable if soft corners aren't an issue. Close focusing is another great feature. Very versatile once you get your composition chops down.

well built
small
easy to MF
negative:vignetting
comment:I have bought it based mostly on Dyxumers opininons about this lens and happy with help provided here. I have no lens for proper comparison, but this lens

- is lovely, small, covering nearly 100 deg angle;
- has great centre area and surprisingly good edges;
- is from F5,6 up to F8 sharp from 2m up to infinity, if MF set on the half way from 1m mark to infinity mark, so in good light shooting can be easy with no focusing at all;
- has strong vignetting wide open, if it matters (but ok for me).

Because of very small market on my home country my mostly selected possibility to come or not to come familiar with new lens has been obtaining it and if not for me, selling after some use as quickly as possible. I think this lens will stay in my bag for years as great lens for my needs and fun to use. This lens is somehow compensating nex7 slower contrast AF when shooting kids in good light and keep me more patient before decision to replace nex7 with newer model.

positive:small (without hood), max. aperture, relatively short min. focussing distance, nice out-of-focus blur at closer distances, good sharpness even wide open
negative:flare, colours just a little flat, some internal reflections at high-contrast scenes (with A6000), large-diameter hood
comment:I have the Walimex Pro branding of that lens. Very nice lens, sharp in the image centre and not far behind at the borders (sufficiently sharp wide open for my taste). The relatively large aperture and short min. focussing distance enable a nice background blur. The highlights are round wide open and without too much distracting structure. There are some lateral CAs towards the image borders which stay even closed down. I have seen some problems with blue/violet internal (or sensor?) reflections (noticed on A6000), but this appears only in extreme situations. Flare compensation is also not a strength of this lens, with contrast reduction over larger portions of the frame (e.g. in backlit conditions). Large hood. This review might sound a little pessimistic, but overall I reckon it to be a very apt lens, able to make some outstanding photos.

positive:- ultrafast
- sharp
- small
- cheap
- small minimal focus distance
- well built

comment:One-of-a-kind lens - combining f:2 and UWA is amazing thing. Small minimal distance, fast aperture and wide FOV allows lots of creatvity. A pity we can't see something simillar with AF (at f:2 even at 12mm you need to worry about focus). If you have money choosing between this lens and SEL 10-18 is not easy... you should have both.

price paid:280 USD (used)
positive:small, light weight, low cost and sharp enough
negative:CA along high contrast edges
comment:At f/2.8 and f/8, I see very little difference across the image between this lens and the Zeiss Touit. Save your money and get this one.
At f/2 this lens is definitely soft all over. At f/2.8 the center is sharp and stays that way. The edges show improvement through f/8.

price paid:315€
positive:Very sharp, nice build,nice colours, nice crisp images, very low distortion for a 12 mm
negative:underexposes quite a bit (though this can easily fixed), MF only though this is not really a problem.
At F8 and focus at infinity all landscape will be sharp.

comment:I love this lens. It is small,light, well-build and produces very nice images. The F2 is not for show. It is already sharp and it gives you a nice background blur.

price paid:330 euro (new)
positive:Sharpness
Bokeh
Weight, size
Distortion
negative:Flare
comment:The build quality of the lens is very good. The center sharpness is great even at f2, the corners are good, stopped down to f4 is very good. Distortion is well-controlled, compared to the Sigma 10-20, although the Sigma is 2mm wider.
The flare is an issue, the Sigma had less flare, or maybe it is more controlled.
The focus ring should be just a little bit smoother (at least for me), but it is still good. The apreture ring clicks at every half aperture. The hood is surprisingly big for a small lens, but it is needed because of the ultra wide FOV.

Carl Zeiss 16-35 (on a A99)
price paid:300 eur (new)
positive:Small size and light weight
Feels solid
Really sharp center at f2, great overall sharpness @ f5.6-f8
Nice colors
Affordable price
negative:Manual focus (but on a ultra wide angle, this is not hard to master)
comment:I had been waiting for a lens like this since I changed my A580 for a NEX 6.
I had my reservations because of the manual operation of this lens. However it is quite easy to get used to the manual focusing. On a bright day for landscape pictures, I just set the aperture on f8 and focus on 1m distance. Everything 50cm away from the focal plane will be in focus because of the hyperfocal.
In any other situation, the focus peaking function of my NEX 6 works fine. In any case you get such a deep DOF that it is really easy to get your subjects in focus.
Combined with the suberb 35f1.8 from Sony, these two lenses make the perfect travel combo.
As much as picture quality, this lens procudes outstanding results... I believe even better corners that my Sony 20mm (on a A99).
If only, both the Zeiss 16-35 and the Sony20f2.8 produce warmer colours than the ones produced by this lens (at the same WB setting).
There is quite some distortion, a bit more than the one you get with the Zeiss 16-35 at the same (equivalent) focal distance, but I would say the same one I get with the 20mm (and this one has a larger angle of view than the 20mm).
