ownership:I own this lens
compared to:SAL 18-250
Older Sigma 17-70 (pre HSM) used to own that and this one is much better and that was one of the better zooms in this range.
price paid:499 USD
positive:HSM focusing is nearly silent.
Very sharp across the entire field. At 17mm widest the edges gradually do get softer.. But web tests and mine show it to be really sharp to the edges.. Compared to other lenses I have used in this range.
Size is nice
negative:Macro shots can take the lens front right up to the object.
HSM does make clicking noise when stopping, starting, changing direction. This can be heard on video when shooting a low noise scene.
Overides a77 MF setting. AF/MF switch on lens has final say. This disables DMF but focus peeking still works.
comment:I wanted quieter focusing and sharper lens for my new a77. Had been doing casual shooting with A700 but want to do some more serious shots.
